Tabitha Roux Character in Nascindor | World Anvil

Tabitha Roux

The name of Tabitha Roux is well-known across the city states. Her musical compositions and recitals of legends and folklore always garner a sizable crowd wherever she chooses to perform. Those who witness her acts are richer in spirit for it.

Early life

Tabitha was born in Haven, the daughter of a couple of wheat farmers. Her childhood days were spent cavorting in the golden fields and, later on, working on those same fields.
Then, on a hot summer's day, a traveling troupe of performers stopped in Haven on their way to Glarithia. They were allowed to camp in the communal grounds and, to express their gratitude, they performed to the community free of charge. Tabitha, along with her parents attended the show and she was utterly captivated by the airy melodies the troupe produced with their lutes, flutes and drums. She asked them whether they could teach her to play like them, to which the traveling bards instructed her to attend the Glarithian Academy of Arts where they too received their formal training.
Tabitha pleaded with her parents and, after some convincing, managed to get their blessing for a career in the arts. In the winter of that very same year, she applied to and was accepted into the academy. During her first year, she mastered two of the bardic instruments, the lute and the penny whistle. She studied in tandem with Xyp'sho whom she became a sort of muse for, inspiring his artwork with her music and singing, and his art in turn fueled the songwriting, composition and lorecraft of Tabitha.
At the age of sixteen, Tabitha graduated from the academy with honors. Bidding goodbye to Xyp'sho and after a visit to Haven to meet her parents and siblings, she set out into the wider world, intent on sharing her music and stories with those who would listen.

Traveling minstrel

For the last several years, Tabitha has travelled the breadth of Nascindor and performed anywhere she might find herself in. From the drunks of the dock-side taverns of Wapemond Harbor to the penitent Seekers of Contrition Lodge, her crowds have been as varied as the locales they've been in.
Each new location she reaches is another opportunity to learn a new story or be inspired and write a song, not to mention that the peoples of Nascindor are often more than willing to take part in her performances, joining in with any instruments they might be capable of playing. This, in fact, is the driving force behind Tabitha's wanderlust. She wants to spread the joy of creation and to validate each and every person she might come across through shared positive experiences.

Click-Clack

In her travels, Tabitha eventually drifted into the Death's Head Orchard, performing to the small communities of Fringe Folk that inhabit the outer rim of the Black Forest. During one of these trips, as it was getting late, she set up her tent in a long abandoned graveyard at the very edge of the woods. Before she could settle down for a good night's sleep, however, she heard what could only be described phonetically as a click-clack sound. Getting out of her tent, she looked for the source of the sound.
After a few moments, she received a fright as a Poppet sprang forth from behind a gravestone, wielding two bones and striking them against eachother while shrieking loudly. When the initial scare dissipated, Tabitha burst out laughing which greatly confused the little creature. Tabitha grabbed her flute and played a little jingle to the tiny imp-like creature, who seemed enamored by the sound of the instrument. After sharing a piece of dried meat over a campfire, Tabitha draped the little Poppet in a colorful scarf of hers and bid it farewell.
However, the Poppet was not having it. It followed Tabitha and climbed onto her shoulder despite repeated attempts to dissuade it. Therefore, Tabitha was forced to accept that she had just gained a new friend and companion. In honor of his percussive style of scare, she named the creature Click-Clack.
Today, Click-Clack remains with Tabitha, and collects donations in-between songs and performances. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Click-Clack is very popular among children.
