Tohorai Makutu

The Tohorai are an ancient species of whale-like creatures that travel the Astral Sea and feed on residual magic left behind from the casting of spells. Their race is as ancient as magic itself, and it is them who keep the Magical Weave in balance by taking care of the residual magic so that it does not overflow and damage the Weave. During the Golden Age of Magic, The tohorai lived in the material plane and would sail along the skies, as the largest source of residual magic were the gods and races who lived there. After the schism and the calamity however, the sources of magical power have been divided across the multiverse, so the Tohorai stay mostly in the Astral Sea where they feed off of the larger concentrations of magic floating around. The younger ones and some adults sometimes pass by the material plane if they sense the residual magic of a powerful spell, but the most ancient ones exist only in the astral sea, as they require more nourishment the older they get. The young ones can be kept as pets for wizards who can feed them from their spells, and powerful wizards may even have adult Tohorai as pets, but a time always comes when they have to leave because the limited power of mortal casters is not enough to feed the creatures properly. Because of how long the Tohorai can live however, they take a long time to mature into adulthood, so this process can take hundreds of years.
