The Sandibar Languages

The Sandibar Languages are a collection of dialects emerging out of the earliest forms of Sandibar spoken on Mudewei during the time of Sandibari contact with The Stenza. When the Stenza built ships, the Sandibari spread across the universe, and in the fifteen-hundred year period have diverged into separate ethnicities with semi-mutually-intelligible dialects.   The central aspects of each dialect are clicking and chirping sounds made with the mandibles and legs. Each distinct sound has meaning, but it takes an experienced ear practice and focus to distinguish each. As dialects diverged, each sound gained a slightly different meaning depending on who that particular group of Sandibari were sharing their ships with. A Sandibar from a Mudeweian ship means something different when they try to say "conflict" compared to a Sandibar from an Althusian or Muxteran ship, for example.   While a Sandibar can understand a non-Sandibar, and vice versa, it is physiologically impossible for either to speak the other's language. Universal Translators are also limited by this, and no known work-around has been developed as of 2499. Sandibari dialects remain the code of choice for communicating secret information among rebels, terrorists, and other insurgents for this very reason.
