Sandibar-Albarian

Usually, "the voice of the oppressed" is metaphorical, referring to a particularly charismatic leader or figurehead within a movement. In The Nine Systems, however, "the voice of the oppressed" has a literal meaning: the Sandibar-Albarian dialect used primarily aboard Albarian smuggler and cargo ships.   Despite their generally peaceful disposition toward the wider universe, the "Cleansing" of Albar has caused the Albarian Sandibari to schism with groups of Sandibari more loyal to the empire, such as the Mudeweian Sandibari. As such, the Albarian Sandibari have become archetypal "rebel spies", and part of that effort has been actively mystifying their particular dialect of Sandibar until it is unrecognizable. This effort has resulted in the language becoming something of a code, where double entendres abound and one really has to work to understand the true meaning of what is being said.   Some Albarian Sandibari express concern that the "code-ifying" of their language will result in the loss, over time, of meaningful history, oral, and other cultural information. Because codes are built on "the now", the concern is that future generations will lose something because it was willfully obscured by the needs of Albarian Sandibari in the middle of the "cleansing". They are working to preserve the true meanings of everything for posterity.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary leans heavily into double meanings, substituting common and innocuous phrases to stand in for important tactical information that the Stenza or their Mudeweian allies could pick up through word of mouth. There is concern this will compromise the integrity of historical and cultural information.
