Aiyary Coast

The Aiyary Coast (often called Lunar Coast, as Aiyary means Moon in native language of its inhabitans) is a coalition of free-cities, that are located in the most southern part of Saarma continent. Aiyary Coast is considered the most influential power in the open seas, as well as home to a large population of water genasi and halfling.

Locations

Aiyary Coast is one of the unique parts of Saarma continent - for half of the year most of its territories gets flooded by waters, leaving the land covered in small and big rivers and pools, that only in some parts are too deep to traverse on foot and require the help of locals and their boats. The summer and first half of autumn is when the land is free from its water prison. Due to this, the settlements of Aiyary Coast adapted to the unusual living conditions by building their towns and villages higher over the ground, on additional layers of stone - in case of flooding in rain seasons, this causes only the streets to fill with water, creating canals that can be traversed on boats. All the farming and industrial activity is are held on the territories that were determined safe from the flooding of water.
  • Port Oborozu - one of the most important port cities of the continent and surrounding waters. Most of Aiyary Coasts life, trading and diplomatic activity takes place in Oborozu. The city is a cultural centre of the Aiyary Coast, having many theatres, operas, art workshops, concert halls and other places that attract people of culture. It has the biggest harbour, that yearly welcomes hundreds of ships from all over Mriyar, making it one of the centres of world trade. The Aiyary Seafaring Academy is one of the famous marine educational institution on the continent, attracting many future captains to the city. The temple of Mokosh, known as the Moon Pools, is also located here, attracting many travellers for its unusual beauty and wonder - the pools themselves vary in temperature and mineral composition, making it a popular destination for rehabilitation and improvement of one's health. The temple has a large bathhouse on its grounds that is open for everyone throughout the year. Many noble families from other countries own real estate in Oborozu for summer seasons. The city has a separate district filled with different establishments focused specifically on entertainment industry - the most famous bars and brothels is located here. Additionally, quite a few guild have their headquaters in Oborozu - a few of them are Engearian Ring, The Golden Eye and The Emerald Compass.
  • Kogarash - is the second, in size and importance, port city of Aiyary Coast. The production and work in the city is focused on mining and refinement of gems and noble metals, especially silver, that is mined in Silver Peaks. The jewelry business is booming, and, thanks to magical enchantments by local arcane practitioners, the city has a large choice of enchanted trinkets for travelers. The other dominant production is focused on textile - Kogarash has many weaving workshops, that over the years provided clothing for large number of royal courts.
  • Cokkoz - this city can be considered the farming centre of Aiyary Coast, for its many vineyards, olive and fruit fields, and different spices. Many artists find their way to Cokkoz for the beautiful scenery that the city provides. The Serpent Eye, a temple dedicated to Veles, is located in the city and is a popular destination for poets and musicians that are studying in the Liberal Arts Academy of Cokkoz. As of the beginning of 11th century, Gear & Feather started building their first airship port on the mountain side near the city.
  • Aikapkas - a relatively large town, through which pass all the Aiyary and Sarmarian caravans. Located between the two mountain ranges, it has great climatic conditions for growing many types of fruits, especially citrus. Aikapkas has many olive fields and vineyards, though not as large as in other cities of the Coast. The town has a variety of inns and taverns, to host many travellers at once, and the town bustles with people throughout the year, though the number of visitors drastically increases in summer up to the beginning of winter. As good as the life in town is, Aikapkas has to deal with many creatures and water spirits, that inhabit the cosy space in-between the mountain ranges.

    People and Society

Citizens of Aiyary Coast, or Aiyarysts, are considered one of the most care-free and adventurous nations in the continent. Most of them know the seafaring by heart, as many jobs on the Coast are associated with the seas. "Gentle as calm waters of the sea and passionate in their anger as the fury of the storm" is often used to describe those who lived for most of their lives in Aiyary Coast. Aiyarysts are easy going and daring, though many of them are just as easy to start conflicts over smallest things. Many most known artists and seafarers called Aiyary Coast their home.

  • Autonomy
  • Sahrilar - the fishing town, that by Aiyary Coast standards, is located "in the middle of nowhere". Though, that plays right into the hands of numerous illegal groups, that took residence in the town. Sahrilar, at first glance, is nothing more than a withering fishing town with a relatively big harbour, but all the main activity in the town starts in the evening - that's when all the unsavoury guests, mostly pirates, finally meet-up in the taverns and inns of the town. Sahrilar is considered the unofficial Black Market of open seas, for the number of illegal activity that takes place here - though, the ruling Council of Aiyary Coast closes their eyes on such thing, for the amount of monthly money that keeps coming their way. Sahrilar also has a decent presence of Jormunhir worshippers as well a Levianid Temple.
  • Yugen Library - it's a place where all the knowledge from the world and beyond finds its home. It was build back at Era of Rebirth, by the newly created race of water genasi, under the guidance of clerics of Veles and Mokosh to study, research and preserve all knowledge and secrets for the years to come. The many archives, build under the main complex of the Library, store thousands of manuscripts, books and other pieces of media, as well as a sizable collection of artefacts. The surface part of the complex consists of many residential and grand buildings, libraries, temples and shops of different sorts. The island that the Library was build on, is fully covered by different buildings, port infrastructure or fishing houses. Nowadays, the Library grounds are mostly populated by large number of water genasi, and occasional humans or elves that received the permission to stay in the Commune - water genasi are glad to pay for and receive any knowledge that is brought to them, but they don't usually allow strangers outside their community to stay within their circle. As such, they also cut all ties with those water genasi, that decide to find a different way of life, than the one that the Library offers them.
  • Government

    • Government type
    • Aiyary Coast is a coalition of city-states - Oborozu, Kogarash and Cokkoz. The Coast is ruled by the Oligarchy power structure (more specifically - plutocracy). Each of the cities is ruled by Pasha -chosen members of influential and rich groups in Aiyary Coast, that work as both governors and generals. Pashas closely work with the Aiyary Society - an exclusive group of Aiyary Coast's oligarchs, that regulate the trading routes, diplomatic relationships, inner political and social problems etc. for their own gain. The Pasha has their own number of subordinates, that take care of different needs of the city and report back to their superiors.
    • Nobility and Privilege
    • It is not without reason that many believe that Aiyary Coast is a heaven for those who have money. The Aiyary Coast has a strict hierarchy of its citizens, and each group have their own set of privileges and norms - starting from low ground street beggers and farmers, and finishing with rich nobles and close circle of Pasha. Many noble families from across Saarma and Artan continents often have vacations in Aiyary Coast, in their personal residences. It is a wide known fact in the Aiyary Union, that the more money and influence you have, the less rules and laws you have to obey.
Each city has their number of lords, rich merchants that influence political and trading grounds of the Coast. There is a very distinct separation between each of social groups, which even led to complete segregation of districts populated by low class. Most of the guards would rather listen to those of the higher class than lower, which creates a number of problems and discrimination inside Aiyary society.
    • Crime and Punishment
    • Swiftsong - most influential criminal organization from Sarmaria, that also works in Aiyary Coast. They are known for illegal trafficking, contraband, casinos, slave-trade and drug deals - and many other things. Name any illegal activity, and the Swiftsong probably dealt in it. They control the Black Market of Sarmaria and are one of the main dangers to caravans on the Sarmarian and Aiyary roads. The "swiftsong" name came from the whistling sounds the members use in their communication, when they are raiding any sort of establishment or caravan. Location of headquarters are rumoured to be in Sarmarian Republic, in Trykraty, and in Aiyary Coast, in Sahrilar.
A number of thief groups call Aiyary Coast their home, which does indicate a high rate of crime in the Aiyary cities. It is rumoured, that the underground society of Aiyary Coast is controlled by their own crime lord(s).
Observance of the law is supervised by Karayak, or how they often called "Black Collars" - Aiyary Coast's guard unit, that operates in all settlements of the Coast. They deal with investigation of crimes as well as enforce laws. Though it's not unusual that the guards quite often close their eyes to crimes commited by nobles.
    • Allies and Adversaries
    • Military
    • Aiyary Coast has a strong navy, though it is inferior in strength to the marine presense of other countries. As it is, most of the military ships of Aiyary Coast patrol the waters of Varyatan, Engear and Melusian seas, guarding trading ships against pirates.

    Industry & Trade

  • Trade, Guilds and Market
  • The Coast's market is fully controlled by the Aiyary Society - an exclusive group of Aiyary Coast's oligarchs. All the trade prices and exclusive contracts of import or export is handled by them. As it is, Aiyary Coast is the prime exporter of different oils and some unique spices, and has a strong presence when it comes to fish and textile trade.
  • Research and Arcane
  • Aiyary Coast has a very complicated relationships with magic users - legally arcane users are very restricted in their rights to use magic, preventing them from using most of combatative and widespread area of effect spells. Any arcane research is allowed only by Pasha, quite often after a large bribe, and is kept under strict supervision. Nevertheless, many nobles invite mages to their parties and formal events.
A science field is held almost under same conditions - most of the scientists answer directly to Pasha and quite often conduct research specifically for the needs of Aiyary Society. Those who don't, and study their own points of interest, either have a generous sponsors or somehow find money to buy the needed permissions and rent of accommodation.
Aiyary Coast often sends expeditions in the open seas, to conduct studies of the Tranquil Expance, leviathans activity or sea anomalies most often caused by influence of the Elemental Plane.
Society for Elemental Phenomena and Magical Influence (S.E.P.M.I.) - an exclusively Aiyary Coast's group of scientists, who investigate anomalies caused by elementals and mages in the sea and on the Coast itself. They organize yearly expeditions in the open seas, to find new sightings of influence from the Elemental Cataclysm, the Rupture or from arcane experiments of Magior Empire. Headquaters located in Cokkoz.
Aiyary Coast's research sphere revolves around studies and scientific research in Yugen Library, even though the complex itself is located on separate island, and not the coast itself. The many archives, build under the main complex of the Library, store thousands of manuscripts, books and other pieces of media, as well as a sizable collection of artefacts.
  • Farming & mining
  • Aiyary Coast wines are considered the best, and hence expensive, wines on both Saarma and Artan continents. Each of the free city-states have their own wineyards, though the Oborozu takes the leadship in the territory of their wineyards. In addition, Cokkoz and Aikapkas have a large production of olives, oils and different exotic fruits.
Even though Aiyary Coast doesn't have any alatrian deposits, they export a decent number of noble metals, mined in the Silver Peaks, as well as jemstones.

    Customs

  • Religion - Aiyary Coast doesn't have one unifying religion, instead allowing presence of multiple different churches, both of Creator Pantheon and of Renegade Pantheon. As such, all three main port cities of the Coast has a strong following of the Dreamweaver and the Shapeshifter, which is influenced by large population of water genasi. Some sailors also pray to Zorren and Jormunhir, though the second one is usually kept in secret or talked about only among the familiar faces and in the safety of small temples.
  • Temples
  • Yugen Library - not specifically a temple complex, the Yugen Library has a large hall dedicated to both Veles and Mokosh, where clerics of both deities held their rituals and ceremonies. The halls are famous for the biggest stone statues of the Shapeshifter and the Dreamweaver, that reach heights of around 36m (118 ft).
  • Serpent Eye - temple dedicated to the Shapeshifter in Cokkoz.
  • Moon Pools - temple dedicated to the Dreamweaver in Oborozu.
  • Levianid Temple in Sahrilar - also names Sea King's Nest, it's a small temple dedicated to Jormunhir. The one of such kind on the whole Saarma and Artan Continents.
  • Guilds and Factions

  • The Golden Eye - a guild of seafarers and treasure seekers, that explore underwater ruins, sunken ships and all sorts of abondoned places across the seas. Headquaters located in Oborozu.
  • The Emerald Compass - big and prosperous guild of adventurers and guides in the most dangerous and exotic places of Mriyar. For the right price, adventurers can find any sort of map or information on different places of the world, be it on the land or at sea. Headquaters located in Oborozu.
