Session 005 - Dead in the Waterways
General Summary
Date 21 to 24 Nuzyael 720TR (Spring)
Athena travels to the Coranan's largest library, the Temple of Hyn-Aelori. On her way she meets a silver haired, possibly albino young woman. This reserved and antisocial wizard calls herself Quazzy.
At the the temple of Hyn-Aelori Athena and Quazzy walk past several Checkered Shield Guards who are understandably tense given Athena's Crimson Dancer affiliation. In the lobby, they discover the Statue of Var-Hyvrak, the book of all knowledge, and on inspection, Quazzy is able to find her, and Athena's name has been written within. After looking away and back again, she finds she cannot find any such records.
Eventually, they contact a researcher, Valmera , a priestess of Save K'Nor who is willing to investigate records of the Heart of Trondan for them. Valmera is writing research papers on the various Fighting Orders and is interested in questioning Athena for her experiences with the Crimson Dancers.
The adventures regroup, Yureb returns from his burglary mission and they find the innkeeper has message for them. Argon Sarton, the brass-smith, has a job opportunity.
The Contract
Argon Sarton Brassware shop has access to a cistern for which he uses to supply water to cool his brass works. It has run dry, possibly due to a blockage. He is unwilling to send down his apprentice to clear it as he can hear a strange moaning and the persistent rumors of undead prowling the waterways.
He hires the party to travel down into the cistern and clear or deal with any blockages.
The players make their way down. However, they recall the chilling myth of Jinny Blackteeth, the Hag below the streets. The very location they are traveling to is where the legendary Jinny is said to stalk.
The cistern is dry and infested with Giant Rats, which were easily dealt with. Quazzy sends her rat familiar through a tiny passageway and finds there is a blockage; however, it will need to be cleared at the other end.
The heroes move forward and discover an ancient crypt within a strong evil necromantic aura. The aura is strong enough to animated undead, and the characters have a series of harrowing battles with Skeletons and Zombies. Worse was the Rotfiend, a strangely semi-decomposed corpse with a particularly vile acrid stench. Only after Athena empowered her sword with Balefire was it able to be dispatched.
The characters are able to clear the blockage, and water is able to flow again.
Rewards Granted
Athena gains Level 3.
She focuses her desire for revenge on the Hamlens and plans to take the Oath of Vengeance.
Quazzy gains Level 2.
Given the traumatic events she experienced and the training she received during her time with the mysterious cult, she found an affinity for Necromatic Magics.
