City of Coranan

Much of the inspiration and details is derived from Colombia Games

Coranan is Hârn’s largest city and capital of the Thardic Republic.

It is a very cosmopolitan city’s with many palaces, and major buildings are the legacy of the once-powerful Corani Empire. Now home to the Senate of the Republic, Coranan remains the center of Thardic power and patronage.

The city consists of several districts, all separated by walls and patrolled by semi-autonomous bodies of armed guards.

Demographics

The vast majority of the population are Hârnian. There are a few Jarin, mostly Ilivir worshipping pilgrims and some Ivinian mercenaries.

Slaves and mercenaries from nearby tribal nations are also present in small numbers.

Dwarven merchants and Elven visitors are few, and in the latter case, usually in disguise.

Government

Coranan is the seat of the Senate and capital of the Thardic Republic.

The city itself is governed by two officials, both appointed by the Senate for one-year terms.

The Prefect - handles financial, judicial, and other civic matters and is effectively a mayor. The current Prefect, in his 6th term, is the scholarly and frail Toribir Wejik, a man well respected by the Senate.

The warden - commands the Red Guard and is responsible for defense and security.

Defences

Coranan is very well defended with impressive walls and guard towers.

The Citadel - an impressive fortress and base of the Red Guard.

Kuseme Castle - headquarters of the Eidel Legion.

The Red Guard is the "Elite'' of the Republic legions in theory responsible for the cities security, but common patrolling is beneath their dignity. They are only active at the Citadel and around the Chamber of Red Domes and key government buildings plus around the senatorial elite.

The private mercenary company the Wardens of Corthir holds the contract to man the city walls and gates.

By law, members of the Eidel Legion, based at Kuseme Castle, cannot step foot over the Thard River. Nevertheless less they are a potent military force.

Most wealthy and powerful residents retain private guards; some are the size of small armies. Rivalries between these paramilitary units can be extreme and sometimes escalate into violence.

Industry & Trade

Coranan is a rich city with significant sources of income.

Resources

Salt and iron are mined nearby, and the city exports locally manufactured brasswares, pottery, and textiles.

Trade

The city is positioned at the western end of the Salt Route, the only land trade route to eastern Hârn. The Caravans containing all manner of goods leave in Spring and return in Autumn.

Other Revenue

A portion of all taxes and fines from throughout the Republic find their way into the city.

Festivals

Peonian Restoration Festival

4 Peonu - Priests parade the temple relics through the city streets in ox-drawn carts while adherents throw flowers into the crowd, ending in a grand feast in the commons.

The Great Spring Fair

5 to 15 Peonu - A great fair is held every spring at the departure of the largest caravans to the Kingdom of Kaldor. Merchants from throughout western gather and fortunes change hands.

Agrikan The Feast of Balefire

8 Agrazhar – The most popularly observed Agrikan holiday. At sundown, after a day of spectacles at the arena, adherents carry torches in a solemn procession of eight loops around the city. The parade ends back at the arena, where the finest livestock is slaughtered and roasted for a feast.

Peonians Harvest Home festival

4 to 7 Azura - Peonians come from villages from throughout the Republic to celebrate, filling the western common with agriculturally inspired contests of skill, strength, and endurance.

Halean Banquet of Delights

1 to 7 Halane - The most important major festival of Halea, is the seven days and nights of commerce, revelry, and debauchery that coincide with the return of the last of the autumn caravans.

The Eve of the Winter Solstice.

1 Ilvin - Traditionally seen as a time when evil spirits and shades of the departed walk the mortal realm. People of all faiths mark the occasion with prayer and a host of superstitious practices that have sprung up to ward off ill luck.

Infrastructure

Buildings

The Republic most important government buildings are within the city.

Chamber of Red Domes - Meeting place of the Senate.

Coranan Mint - Where Coins are made.

Place of Mejenes - The ministry for war.

Palace of Gules - A large College of Heralds with an immense Heraldic Records dating back to the Corani Empire.

Place of Gelashen - Residence of the Prefect.

Pamesani Arena - Home to the violent Pamesani games.

Rafters' Wharf - Extensive harbor complex, some say controlled by the thieves guild.

Temples

Coranan's has a wide range of Churches and religious institutions.

Agrik - Order of the Octagonal pit and the Pamesani arena.

Larani - Order of Hyvrik (Basilica of Mindrithar the Just).

Naveh - The Servants of Dekejis. This secret temple of this heretical sect is hidden under the Blue Clover Tavern. It is believed the primary temple to Naveh was destroyed by the Order of the Cohorts of Gashang in Winter of 720TR.

Additionally there may be a hidden temple to Agrik - Order of Hepra the Mace.

History

01 Morgat 720TR - A riot breaks at night, and hundreds are killed in the mayhem. The reason for the chaos is not apparent, and many believe the free wines and spirits supplied during the grand Pamesani Games was tainted with mind-altering drugs.

Hi Aemon. Thanks for the feedback. Some of the Coat of Arms I use are from the excellent Colombia games products. The rest I created myself. I have made Blank CoAs using Coral Paintshop and combine them heraldry symbol I have found over the web. I often use http://www.heraldicclipart.com/catalog/index.html.
