Republic of Emirr
A representative government who believes a pursuit of the past will create a better future for all.
Culture
The Republic if Emirr is known across the lands as a center of culture and progress and many of the people born into this nascent nation tend to reflect this. In some parts, this is viewed both with disdain and dismay. In others, there exists a guarded jealously for the seeming success of the Republic and the relatively high standard of living its citizens enjoy. While there is a great deal of truth to this common perception, life within the Republic can be every bit as harsh and unforgiving as it often is in the rest of the world. The constant cold war with the Church of Order has a demanding appetite for both funds and resources. Fortunately, the people of the Republic seem to be up to the task, and are, at least for the moment, more than willing to endure the sacrifices needed to maintain their way of life.
Much as the Republic of Emirr tends display some startling contrasts within the fabric of its nation, the people, most commonly referred to as Emirians, often display the same. On the surface, one will often find a friendly, gregarious, individual with a positive look on what the future holds. Within, however, there always exists an underlying seriousness and concern for what that same future might hold. Every citizen is fully aware that the long-running cold war with the Church could grow hot with almost no notice. Many also wonder if the Church might not have a point when it comes to the Republic's headline drive to pierce the Mist, though few would discuss such concerns openly. Through it all, Republicans are a driven people. No matter their walk in life, most have an almost neurotic need to succeed in whatever goals they have set for themselves and they are willing to take whatever steps needed to reach their goals. This can come in the form of long, hard hours of work followed by even harder parties. It can also come in the form of a willingness to step on anyone and anything that gets in the of those same goals.
Public Agenda
- The Republic believes that to empower the individual with control over their own destiny, you create a more robust and prosperous nation. As such, citizens within the Republic are encouraged to find their own way and to pursue their own goals. Social welfare programs do exist, but the majority of these are supported through a combination of taxes and public donations. The emphasis for this support it placed on the latter.
- Visitors are welcome to come and go from Republic lands. However, any that plan on staying must register with the local administrative body. Likewise, citizens of the Republic are allowed to immigrate to other locals as they wish.
- The rediscovery of the past, and an unearthing of lost technologies and knowledge, is an ongoing effort by the Republic. This is done in close cooperation with the The Silver Spire as that body seems to have a knack for understanding what Seekers and others bring back from the wilds.
History
- The Republic of Emirr is a relatively new political power in the world of Mistburn. Even so, it has significant influence across the world. As a nation, the Republic of Emirr is less than a century old though the alliance between the two principal cities, Palisade and Bastion, goes back much further.
- Palisade and Bastion were not always the close allies they are today. Early on, the two city-states were in direct competition for the fertile lands that lie between them. As with many such situation in the early years after Mist Fall, the cities were focused on the survival of their own and considered any other entity a potential threat to their own survival. Fortunately, those early years of conflict did not last long. Within a few decades of the first conflict between the two cities, the leaders of each realized that there was more than enough farm land to support both and an agreement of land-sharing was reached.
- It was the Kenku and their early days of raiding the towns and villages that dotted the lands below their skyland homes the solidified the friendship between Palisade and Bastion. As the skyland now known as Ke'kannic Tol drifted over Bastion Kenku raider swept down upon the city. The attack was unexpected. The raider not only did significant damage to the city itself, but they also burned more than half the crops waiting for harvest leaving the city short of the supplies they would need to get through the winter. Pallisade, located too distant to directly assist in the fight against the Kenku raiders, offered Bastion a share of their own food reserves. The generosity saved many lives and cemented an alliance that has lasted unbroken since.
- Roughly two hundred years ago Pallisade welcomed the survivors of a half-dead group of Shapers into their city. They were the sole survivors of a Church of Order attack upon the small community the Shapers had establsihed near the foothills of the Grey Spear mountains. The The Church of Order had long sent patrol through regions that Palisade and Bastion considered their own but the two cities had not objected preferring to avoid raising the ire of the powerful city of Ordus. The news and rumors of what the Church's forces had done to the peaceful and isolated enclave changed that. When the pursuing Church forces arrived at the city and demanded the band of Shapers be turned over to them Palisade refused. This led to an attack by the Faceless Order. While Palisade forces bled the Faceless the fall of the city seemed inevitable. The Church had, at the time, an unequaled military. Even the impressive defenses Palisade boasted only served to slow the Faceless advance, especially given the casualties Church leaders were willing and even eager to endure. On the even of the city's defeat, however, Bastion's own army arrived flanking the Church forces delivering the greatest defeat the Church of Order had ever suffered.
- After defeating the Chruch's forces the military elements of Palisade and Bastion began working even more closely with one another. Combined with the knowledge the Shaper refugees brought with them the combined military grew powerful enough to defend both cities from a number of additional Church attacks. It was the beginning of the formation of what ultimately became the Republic of Emirr, named for Prince Emirr Arcbrand who led the Bation forces against the The Church of Order's own army in that first, fateful, battle.
Foreign Relations
Church of Order
The overreaching goals of the Republic of Emirr and those of the Church of Order are incompatible with one another. Where the Church believes in a controlled and regimented society in which all within know their place and purpose, the Republic believes in the strength of the individual and believes it is up to each to find their own way in the world. Further, relations between the two entities is complicated by the fact that the Republic is actively trying to piece together the histories of the times before Mist Fall. Given that the Church actively seeks to repress any research of the past, cordial relations with the two powers are challenging at best. In reality, the two are in a ceaseless cold war.
