Mist Fall

--Excerpt from Braun Sull's 'Piercing the Mist'   Secrets. They are countless. Some are small - inconsequential. The husband who cheats on his wife. The clerk who steals from the till. Their shock of their inevitable discovery will be felt only by the husband and wife, the lover, the till thief, the merchant.   Then there are the large secrets. These are the ones that shake and shape entire nations. Betrayals, that when suddenly laid bare to the world, can lead to armies mobilizing and war that kills thousands. The envy of a younger heir who plots to kill his elder so that he might one day sit upon the throne. Such things can destroy dynasties that have ruled for generations. Yet, even the ripples of these peter out. Wars end; new dynasties arise.   There is but one secret in the entire world that, if ever pierced, may very well change the fate of an entire world. What, you might ask, is this mighty secret? What is so powerful that an entire world is at stake? Well, it is the world's first secret.   It is Mist Fall.   Clue to this truth of this secret can be found scattered across the known world. The skeletal remains of cities with buildings so tall that they seem to scrape the sky itself lay bare the simple truth that, before our recorded history, a great civilization existed. But what was that civilization. Who were the people that filled the arteries of those cities? Perhaps most importantly, what brought this civilization to ruin? What toppled the mighty buildings that must have tasted clouds in their prime?   The Church of Order would say that we should leave the Mist alone; that staring into it may cause something to stare back. They preach that it is better to let the Mist swallow the past, lest we waken some malevolent force that will do to us, what it did to those who came before us. To that, I say bull-hockey!   I say that ignorance invites disaster. I say that we must learn what befell those who came before, lest the same thing inevitably happen to us. I say that we must lay bare to the world the truth of the first secret. We must pierce the mist!

Cultural Reception

The legends and myths that surround Mist Fall can be found across the world. While each culture has their own take on it, all agree that Mist Fall is related to the fall of a powerful and advanced civilization.   So ingrained in cultures that many people will say, "It's in the Mist," or some similar phrasing when discussing something or someone who is lost or forgotten.
