David McKay

David Patrick McKay is the main protagonist of the Tales of Mirydain literary series and the narrator of the books. In The Rise of the King, he and his new friend Ginny Langford enter the magical land of Mirydain and discover that they have been brought there to save the land from an ancient evil. David is currently the High King of the free lands of Mirydain.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

David is described as a "good-looking" boy with fair skin, bright-blue eyes, and dark brown hair that is often thought to be black. He wears glasses at home, but when he was given a Solution of Sight by Glindor the Wizard, he would only have need of them at home. He had a problem with acne starting at age thirteen, but he outgrew it in little more than a year. David is not strongly built, but during his time in Mirydain, he gained a rather fair build.

Identifying Characteristics

David's most revealing feature is his eyes, whose blue color is described as beautiful by many who meet him.

Physical quirks

David's right arm is his dominant arm, which he uses for writing, drawing, and most hand-required activities.

Apparel & Accessories

David typically wears T-shirts and long pants at home, sweaters in cold weather, and shorts in spring and summer. On his first adventure in Mirydain, he wore a cloth tunic, pants, and leather boots on the journey to the province of Gonnarch. In battle, David is seen wearing the golden armor of the kings of Gonnarch which bears the coat of arms that belonged to King Isandor; a golden lion on a violet field, surrounded by seven crowns representing the Seven Heavenly Virtues. David wears brightly-colored tunics and pants as his royal garments and is rarely seen at the castle without his crown.

Specialized Equipment

David's personal weapon is the magical sword Anrilas, which is the sword wielded by the kings of Gonnarch since the beginning of their kingdom. The Dwarf-made shield Dionurrain is the only shield he uses, as he values life insofar as he can benefit his neighbors.

Mental characteristics

Education

David spent his elementary years at Atholton Elementary, where he made his first long-lasting friendships. His middle school years saw him at Hammond Middle School, after which he moved on to Hammond High School in 2012.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Failures & Embarrassments

David is particularly embarrassed about how he was as a little child: overactive, occasionally rough-speaking, and complaining over minor inconveniences.

Mental Trauma

David's loss of his mother a month before he turned seven has been the dominant mental scar on his life. He admits to missing her even seven years after his loss, but he has learned to have faith that he will be reunited with her.

Intellectual Characteristics

At home, David is a lover of music and good films. He is intelligent in subjects such as science, English, history, and math to a degree. In Mirydain, David turned out to be skilled in swordsmanship and horseback-riding, which he took to practicing before leading the free peoples of Mirydain to protect the country from the Dark King.

Morality & Philosophy

David is a firm believer in God and a devout follower of Jesus, whom he accepted as his Lord and Savior on New Year's Day before his eighth birthday. His faith is the driving force that helps him lead his friends throughout each of their adventures and overcome the evils that threaten the land of Mirydain. David hates evil in all its forms and tries his best to do what is right, although he admits that he tends to falter rather easily. Despite his flaws and having a few regrets, he tries to set matters right in the end. David has a strong sense of family, is quick to protect those he loves, and makes a fine leader. As High King of Mirydain, David easily steps into his role and became beloved by the peoples of Mirydain, eventually gaining recognition as the greatest and wisest king that Mirydain had ever known.
