King of Gonnarch

The King of Gonnarch is a title and rank belonging to the male sovereign of Gonnarch, the largest land of Men in the magical country of Mirydain.

Requirements

The age of a rising monarch of Gonnarch must be eighteen years or older to achieve the crown of Gonnarch. When David McKay and Ginny Langford were declared High King and Queen of the free lands, this rule was changed so the ruling monarch could be crowned when he had been found capable of bearing the responsibility.

Appointment

When the Crown Prince has come of age, he becomes king through a coronation ceremony. The Seven Wizards of Mirydain, who are tasked with aiding the free peoples, typically have one of them confer the rulership of Gonnarch on the rising monarch. The Wizard presiding over the Ceremony crowns the new king, after which he sits on his throne and the people pledge their loyalty to him.

Duties

The king is sworn to support his people in times of peace and distress. He must be wise with his words, humble in his successes, and honest in all his deeds.

Responsibilities

The king of Gonnarch owns the land in the realm. He makes the laws and appoints counselors to give him advice in difficult situations. The king has the power to grant land to those under him and appoints judges for civic matters. The severest of matters are typically brought directly to the king. The king of Gonnarch has command over the army and can summon the lords to fight for him.

Benefits

The king of Gonnarch may receive money from taxes. He has the highest authority in the realm and therefore has the power to remove leaders under him if they misuse their power or use it against him.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The crown of the ancient kings is worn on nearly every occasion as well as the signet ring, which signifies a document is law when signed with this ring. In battle, the sword Anrilas and shield Dionurrain are granted to the king as well as the armor worn by the kings of Gonnarch since the days of Isandor the Great.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

If the king dies, his son becomes first in line for the throne and attains the crown when he comes of age. If the king is guilty of misusing his power, then he is considered unfit to rule and may be deposed by his son.

Cultural Significance

The king is viewed as the highest leader and protector of his people under the High King-Above-the-Heavens. The Men of Calidurn interpret the king of Gonnarch as the most powerful man in his realm and they address him as the "King of the Westfolk." The Men of Ashad, who are ruled by chieftains from different tribes, view the peoples of Gonnarch and Anglor as one large tribe and therefore view the king of Gonnarch as the "pale chief."
