Personal history

The Dark King is the main antagonist of the story and ruler of the barren land of Malgrond.   His true name is long forgotten, but his story has been told in Mirydain for many years. He was once a prince of the West whose father was Eàdulf, King of Fréodor, while his mother was Morgainn, one of the last Jinn. He was the oldest of four brothers, who were each gifted in their own way. When their father grew old, he decreed that the kingdom of Fréodor would be divided among each of them, so they would form a kingdom supported with their combined gifts.   The eldest Prince was very angry, for he believed that he alone was capable of rulership of his father's lands, and he swore that he alone would be king. He murdered his three brothers in secret until he could claim the throne, but it was not enough for him. He had seen the peace and the happiness in which the free peoples of Mirydain lived, and as he viewed freedom as “an empty dream of fools and cowards”, he vowed to make himself King of the whole country. He betrayed his people to the army of the northern land of Arvan, then learned and practiced Dark Magic, and returned to his land as the Dark King. He gathered his army of evil creatures together, and took the province for himself and renamed it Malgrond. He planned to conquer all of Mirydain and enslave its people, and so waged war with the free lands for over 200 years.
