Yondar

Yondar are a species of sapient bipedal avians that originated on the alpine world of Yondarim. Natural fliers, Yondar developed among the high peaks of their homeworld, gliding and using thermal updrafts to travel long distances for food. As their society developed, the necessities of clothing, tools, and buildings limited the use of their flight. Today, flight is typically used as an excercise, similar to running or swimming for other species. Depending on the strength of an individual, a Yondar can fly carrying up to half their body weight, though significant payloads make it drastically harder to fly (in terms of speed, altitude, and duration.

Yondar feathers are well-insulated but light, allowing for comfortable settlement in cold climates. Their lungs are well-adapted to the thin air at the top of mountains, but stronger air pressure (such as the levels found at sea level on most worlds) can cause nausea and headaches. This can be overcome with adaptation training, but most Yondar prefer to live at higher altitudes or on planets with lower air pressure.

Xenosociologists are divided about the nature of the Yondar consensus-seeking cognition. One camp believes that the desire for consensus and conformity is what led to the emergence of authoritarian power structures on Yondarim. The other camp is inverted: they believe that millennia of aggressive behavioural sculpting by the various ruling dynasties on Yondarim led to the modern desire for consensus seeking. it should be noted that this desire is not specifically for authoritarianism, as many believe. Rather, Yondar are noted to more commonly agree with any position of group consensus or authority, such as Yondar citizens of the United Nations of Earth believing more strongly in its democratic ideals than many of its Human citizens.

Compared to other species, Yondar prefer to take their time with new subjects, carefully learning and perfecting them. This behaviour often gives xenos the impression that Yondar are slower or otherwise worse at learning than other species, while the Yondar pride themselves on fine-tuning their craft and knowledge. One field where this is not the case is that of physics, where Yondar are often noted to excel even with minimal formal education. Research suggests that Yondar brains are more capable of quickly adopting advanced physics topics due to a natural ability to intuit complex 3D space and motion.

A recent development in the biological history of the Yondar is their development of psionic capabilities during the second half of the 23rd century CE. While it is suspected that some Yondar individuals were psionic in the past, the first known psions emerged in 2249 CE. In 2271 CE, the entire species spontaneously - and simultaneously - developed psionic abilities, albeit at varying levels of competency. While the Yondar are not the only psionic species now, they are generally considered to be the most adept with their abilities.
