Wayne Guardman Character in Mendala | World Anvil

Wayne Guardman

Profile

Friend to Everyone

Wayne is probably the most connected member of the A&A Club. Being close friends with Jandor and Becky, he was one of the three people who helped form the initial endeavor. Despite all of this, Wayne’s role in the club is almost ancillary as he doesn’t participate in much of the activities. He helps Becky with the management of the details and is generally seen as the most approachable of the trio. Members tend to go to him for information or to report problems. He is third in the chain of command but rarely uses this authority.   Wayne is generally friendly and well liked but not particularly open, his cheery façade allowing him to seem more open than he actually is. In reality, Wayne is very private. He doesn’t like to talk about his own fears and concerns, tending to keep them bottled up inside and focusing on the problems of others more to distract himself from his own issues. As a result, he feels like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, especially when it comes to Ashley who he has felt personally responsible for ever since they were young.   When he was 9 years old, Wayne grew tired of other boys teasing him for having a girl as a best friend and so one summer day when they were supposed to go to the woods together, he instead slammed the door in her face, saying he didn’t want to be friends any more. Angry and hurt, she went alone, fell into a pit, and broke her arm and leg. It was Wayne who eventually found her and the guilt he felt made him start to play the role of Ashley’s guardian. Though he doesn’t admit it, that guilt still weighs on him years later and it has done much to alter how he interacts with others.   It was that strong desire to protect that had Wayne, at age sixteen, do something extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening. When Amber went missing after her younger’s brother’s death, Wayne went searching for her. He knew that she was trying to hunt down the gang member who killed her younger brother in a robbery, and he went to try and stop her. This ended in him having a heated confrontation with a group of gang members that almost ended in violence. It is because of this that Amber, like Ashley, feels a very close bond with Wayne, though Amber’s tough nature makes for a different relationship.   However, because of Wayne’s private nature, most of his other friends don’t know how these incidents shaped him. He works hard to never show the deep scars that they have left in his life, and as a result, he is emotionally distant from everyone, even those who he cares a great deal for. It will take a lot to break through the litany of barriers he has put up in his life.

Weapons & Abilities

As a mandant with the rare condition of aceldermitis, Wayne becomes very proficient in mentus and mandamus in addition he has several other abilities including heightened senses and much faster healing and adimus immunity. However, his condition is accompanied by extreme migraine level pain after prolonged use that grows in intensity and frequency over time. Zenith quartz is the only thing that can prevent this and Wayne wears a hat lined with it to prevent this from happening.

History

Wayne and Ashley have known each other since they were toddlers and did most things together when they were young.   When Wayne and Ashley were 9 and 8 respectively, Wayne grew tired of other boys teasing him for having a girl as a best friend and so one summer day when they were supposed to go to the woods together, he instead slammed the door in her face, saying he didn’t want to be friends any more. Angry and hurt, Ashley went alone, fell into a pit, and broke her arm and leg.   As a result of the incident, the relationship between the two was irrevocably altered. Wayne blamed himself for Ashley’s injuries and Ashley was so traumatized by what happened, that she was terrified to leave Wayne’s side for a long time, having associated her rash decision to go off without him as the reason for her misfortune.   This unhealthy codependence between the two has been the foundation of their relationship ever since and though Ashley has slowly grown more independent she still relies on Wayne and he still views himself as her protector.

Nicknames & Petnames

Wayne always calls Ashley by the nickname "Ash"

Relationship Reasoning

Wayne and Ashley's relationship, though incredibly close, is not romantic and neither harbor those feelings for each other. It can be best described as guardian/benefactor. Wayne feels an overwhelming sense of responsibility for Ashley but is not posessive of her. He won’t let anyone or anything hurt Ashley, but also encourages her to make friends and be independent. Despite this, their relationship is very codependent in nature, which can make their attachment to one another unhealthy at times.   For Ashley's part, though she recognizes some of the unhealthy aspects of their relationship, she's reluctant to let go. Because of this, she actively prevents any other girl from getting close to him because she doesn’t want anyone to take him from her.   She trusts Wayne implicitly, will typically do whatever he tells her, and unabashedly clings to him despite constantly being teased about it. As a result, Ashley really doesn’t have any other close friends even though she naturally gets along with everyone.

History

Wayne met Amber when he was eight years old and she was five. His mother often visited Annabelle after she moved from Greengale to Urbis and Wayne became more and more acquainted with Amber and her younger brother Josh. They would spend hours together when their mothers hung out and over the years developed a pseudo-sibling relationship. This is further codified after Amber loses her mother and she is adopted into the Guardman family.

Nicknames & Petnames

Amber teasingly calls Wayne "big brother."

Relationship Reasoning

Though Wayne is protective of Amber, it is different from how he feels about Ashley because he believes Amber can take care of herself and he sees her as capable and independent. Their relationship is more light-hearted, and they often treat each other as true siblings, being teasing and playful with each other. Amber will often rebuff Wayne when he's being especially kind to her, but in reality she craves the attention. To her, Wayne and Mrs. Guardman are the only family she has left and she cherishes that bond.

History

Wayne met Jandor in elementary school when his mom took care of him and a few other children after school. He has a high respect for Jandor because despite always being the biggest and strongest kid, he never bullied, and always sought to avoid conflict. Though they became friends, Wayne always considers Jandor to be a leader and him a follower, despite Jandor never treating him that way. As a result, Wayne isn’t particularly open or close with Jandor, but he trusts him implicitly and will strive to do whatever he can to realize Jandor’s goals. Jandor sees Wayne as the social one, able to make friends with anyone, mediate problems between people, and approach things with logic even in the face of chaos. He was one of the first people Jandor recruits to the A&A club. Wayne knows that he can turn to Jandor for any problem he can’t handle himself and recognizes that Jandor trusts him.

History

Becky and Wayne became friends in elementary school when Mrs. Guardman used to babysit her along with Jandor after school. It was one of the few times Wayne wasn't with Ashley, so the trio became fast friends. This is probably the closest relationship Wayne has outside of his friendships with Ashley and Amber.   Despite this, Wayne and Becky aren't close on a person level. This is because Wayne tends to be emotionally guarded. Instead they developed more of a mutual respect for one another especially throughout middle and high school whenever they would work on school projects together and then later working together in the A&A Club. They learned to rely on each other and compliment each other's skill sets and they're both dedicated to getting the job done.   Because Becky knows she can often have a harsh and abrasive personality, she trusts Wayne to be the ‘face’ of the group and handle the interpersonal relationships with others since that’s what he excels at.
