Session 20 - The Outpost of Fallsmar
General Summary
After opening the puzzled dwarf door, Belak and Totengraber enter the chamber beyond. However, Klein, Ernst, and Bertrand are engaged by a furious Woda roughly 300 feet away from the door’s entrance. She had been acting strange and anxious ever since the party came down to the mines in search of the dwarfs. Once the doors began to open, she lashed out and began to attack the three vulnerable members.
The tight corridors of the mine make for a tactically challenging battle but, Klein and Ernst are able to bring her down in a combined effort of guarding from her attacks and striking when the moment rose. The three party members leave Woda unconscious but disarmed and without her backpack. When they re-enter the room with the dwarf door, it is closed and sealed shut with Belak and Toten nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, Toten and Belak are captured by a squad of about a half dozen dwarfs and brought to separate chambers, alone. The dwarfs conduct ‘interrogations’ of Belak, but due to his friendly and curious nature, these quickly transform into what looks like two old friends catching up after a long-time apart. Belak gets in the dwarfs' good graces enough to learn about some dwarf technology they call ‘automatons’.
Returning to the 3 party members stuck in the corridor with the dwarf door, they attempt, twice, to unseal the door by placing the correct puzzle pieces in the corresponding slots, but twice they fail to unlock the mysteries within. Shortly after the second attempt, the doors start to unseal themselves without placing any of the block pieces. What appear to be dwarf soldiers armed with axes and one holding a long metal pipe, and dressed in full heavy plate.
They ask for surrender and both Ernst and Bertrand follow their commands by disarming themselves. Klein, the more skeptical of the group, refuses these commands and tries to flee the area. He doesn’t make it far before a loud BANG reverberates throughout the corridors of the mine. One of the Dwarves apparently did something to one of those metal pipes to make that sound. Klein seemed relatively unaffected by the sound and continues down the corridors until he is out of sight.
Bertrand and Ernst answer the dwarfs' questions on the spot and hold back nothing of what they have learned from Sister Michaela and the Burgomeister about the dwarfs, and why they were sent here. They are invited into the dwarf stronghold of Fallsmar after retrieving Klein and are then reunited with their friend, Belak. Toten, still being interrogated has yet to be heard from.
After further discussion with the dwarf guard captain, who is now comfortable enough with Belak to remove his helmet and show his face, they learn that the dwarfs are willing to work with Silberbad again, if they are provided with ample rations, notably, the turnips Belak told them about, to continue their work. The party is told they must speak to one of the dwarf leaders, Austri. Who will be in charge of us when we reach the dwarf city of Fallsmar.
They are led to a carriage, the likes of which no one among them has seen before. A carriage that sits on tracks and is not powered by any beast or animal. They enter with the dwarf captain and set off on their journey at a pace they have never traveled before.
