Belak
Belak emerged from the swamp, and remembers nothing of what happened before. He made friends with some animals, but was then driven out by a pack of wolves, who let him know in no uncertain terms that if he stayed in those woods any longer, he would not be long for this world. He made his way to the nearby village of Riesenhain, to fix everyone's shoes. At one point, the Riese confronted Belak, to tell him who was really in charge in the village, but allowed him to stay on, if he would make shoes for them. Then the cobbler Georg confronted Belak - an unwanted competitor, but then decided to hire them to help with the shoe business. Finally, one day, Belak tried to leave the town to meet with his forest forest friends, but the wolves growled at him, and started to approach menacingly, so Belak escaped, promising the wolves that they will regret keeping him in confined in town.
After making his rounds around the village, taking the villagers' shoes in order to return them all fixed up later that evening, he went to visit Klein Horst, who was now living in the big house in the village, and seemed to be someone of importance. Klein saw in Belak someone who can easily collect river stones and craft slings from the leather and laces of the cobbler’s shop. Klein asked Belak to make at least 50 slings, and collect ammunition for them. After dinner, Ernst and Chlothar returned to the church, Belak went off to collect rocks...
Belak is a small creature of under three feet in height. He is typically covered by swamp muck from head to foot.
