Riesenhain

Riesenhain is a village within a day's travel from Greifstadt, but across the Wunsch. The estate is owned by Martin von Horst, the Duke's forester, who has just died. The heir of Martin is in doubt.   The village was the aim of a recent expedition from Greifstadt, which included a company of the city watch, including Ulrich Wolmar. The company was sent to retake the village from marauding ogres who had either eaten or enslaved the population of the village. That expedition perished, all accept Ulrich.   Reisenhain was known as a prosperous farming village, and the gateway into deeper Markwald. It contained between 100 and 150 residents. There were known orc bands operating nearby before the village expelled its lord and ceased contact with the outside world.   Brother Ernst's mentor was known to have gone to the village prior to the outbreak of the Plague.   Approximately two weeks after the failed foray by the city watch, a group of six people led by Martin's illegitimate son Klein made an attempt to investigate the village. This time, the attempt was apparently successful. The group was not waylaid in the swamp by wolves or anyone else, though they did have to make their way past the quicksand and two trees with Riese faces carved into them.    The village was found to contain 35 - 40 dwellings, though the population has certainly declined since the outbreak of the Totentanz. Some families have moved into abandoned dwellings, though some dwellings remain empty. It was found that a local family of orcs had taken over the village (which caused the aged Martin to flee), and that the populatin declined further. Notably, Brother Anselm, who had recently become the local parrish priest, was hauled off by the orcs, and had not been seen since. However, most of the other survivors remained, partly because they were enjoined by Anselm to stay in the village no matter what.     Economically, Riesenhain seems to have rebounded after the devastation. The harvest of the previous year is said to have been exceptional, and the same seems to be true this year. Most houses are in good repair, and luxury products from the east are reaching the village (courtesy of the Riese), even though it is cut off from Greifstadt to its west.
