Ernst's mentor, who taught him how to read. He then went to Riesenhain to become its resident priest before the *Totentanz came. At the time, it was regarded as a kind of retirement. Now Ernst has learned that the village is cut off from the rest of the region, and possibly in deep trouble. He hasn't heard from Anselm in over two years.
