Bertrand von der Marwitz
Bertrand was sent to his aunt Frau von Horst at the age of seven in order to squire for his uncle-in-law, Freiherr Ferdinand von Horst. Ferdinand was an older chap and quite settled into family life, and without much ambition. His passion were epic poems about noble knights (including Grail Knights), and he spent an inordinate amount of time listening to epic singers and poring over tomes of poetry. It was a pretty cushy place to squire for Bertrand, but he didn't learn much about how to be a knight from Ferdinand.
Bertrand's older cousin, had left to seek his own fortune, and then Frau von Horst died during the high point of the Plague, leaving old Ferdinand all alone. Ferdinand became increasingly obsessed with his poems and his knights. He began to talk about going on a quest, which everyone dismissed as lunatic ravings. But a short while back, he sent Bertrand on an errand to a town that's about three days travel from his estate, and when Bertrand returned, Ferdinand was gone. He apparently told the bewildered servants at the castle that he was going to his brother's funeral in Greifstadt, but that he was not planning on returning.
The next morning Bertrand set off toward Griefstadt, in search of his uncle. There, he spoke with Hanno von Vielgebel, the duke's steward, who told him that Ferdinand had gone off to help his nephew, Reynfrid "Klein" Horst to recover his ancestral village. With the help of a guide named Totengraber he hired in a tavern, Bertrand was able to make his way to the village of Riesenhain, where he met Klein.
Bertrand is a human man in his early 20's. He has an athletic build and stands just over six feet tall. His hair is a strawberry blonde color, somewhat curly, and medium in length. He also has a short, well kept beard of the same color.
He has blue eyes and chiseled facial features with a long scar along his right jaw, affecting the growth pattern of his beard. The scar is faded and looks to have happened at a young age.
