Session 31 - Mournful Bogoroditsa
General Summary
As Ivan exited the city with a number of other frightened visitors and people, trying to get away from the soldiers and guards in town. As the people left, a strange dog headed demon approached from the road. The crowd quickly avoided them, as did Ivan, but it approached straight towards him. Strangely, it seemed to want something from Ivan, so he sent it into town to find Lada and Alena, concerned they may have died in the violence.
The guards of the town led this creature to the Our Lady of Liutovitsa monastery, where Lada and Alena had run to, just before the monks sealed the gates. There, the creature let Alena and Lada know where Ivan was before being led out by the guard.
In the meantime, Lada and Alena hid in the church, with a messenger from Voevoda Vasyl' Mikhalovych, letting them know that he was prepared to storm the monastery to extract all those who spoke out against the ruler, and that the Lord would not protect them.
Eventually, Lada and Alena followed the dog-headed demon, who called himself Munkh Khangarid, to the wooded outskirts of town, where they found Ivan. There, the party discussed what to do next. They could try to confront the king of the forest, or speak to the bishop of the approaching Kochmaki... but Ivan had a change of perspective. Lada, looking for a safe place to rest, asked Ivan where that might be. Alena, looking for an enemy to fight, asked Ivan who they should start with. Ivan thought that, with these many enemies, they were too weak to fight them. So they decide to head back south the following day, stopping at the cave near Aleksandrovka. They arrive there on the night of Mournful Bogoroditsa, a day which marks the passion of Gaal on the cross, and his descent into Hell.
They crossed the river with Oleg the Boatman's generous help, but when they reached the cave, it was held by a spirit in the form of Vashti. As it wailed, the party ran, but as Ivan ran, he felt his bones try to leave his body.
When the party looked at him, he had aged to become an old man.
