Starfire Gem Material in Lothrea | World Anvil

Starfire Gem

This article is depicting a potential future of this world. Some events in here might not have happened yet and will be changed by the actions of the players involved in this world. Until these campaigns have concluded, this article will exist in a superposition between existance and non-existance.   Some version of this article will survive, but who knows what it will be when all of this is over

Some people believe these gems are the actual tears of the goddess - crystalized when they hit the earth. It's a beautiful gift to us mortals, allowing us to get a glimpse of the power of the gods.
Starfire Gems are harvested and created by the Star Seekers of the Golden Coast. The refinement of these Gems is a well-protected secret, and only a handful of them are crafted each month.   They hold pure magical energy and are often used to power enchantments and permanent magic installation. Additionally, small gems are used during the casting of magic to empower the spell even beyond the capabilities of the user. Starfire Gems are the only known way to do that without risking Essence Scarring to the caster.

Harvesting & Creation

Raw Starfire Gems can be rarely found all along the Golden Coast. There are two secret mines operated by the Star Seekers - one beneath the Daybreak Orchard and the other one in the mountains near Protreni. The unrefined gems are very pretty and already glow with a slight blueish light, but the magic stored within them can't be accessed in any way.   The refinement process is a closely guarded secret of the Star Seekers. After cutting the gems and polishing them, they are infused with spores of the Ambrosia Fungi during a full moon. This ritual takes up the entire night and can only infuse a handful of gems each time.

Uses & Availability

The Star Seekers are only selling the Starfire Gems to select individuals and forbid the reselling of the gems. This makes it incredibly hard to get access to them without established relations to the order. From time to time, the priests offer small gems as rewards during shows of magic to further facilitate the spread of the Arcane Arts.   The uses of these gems are many versatile. The bigger the gem, the more powerful magic they can power or enhance.
Spell Empowering

While casting a spell, the caster can shatter one of theses gems, unleashing the energy stored within them. This energy empowers the spell even beyond the capabilities of the caster. This is the only known way to achieve this effect without risking Essence Scarring

Item Enchantment

During the enchantment process, magic is infused into an item, creating a permanent magical effect on it. While this process doesn't require the use of a Starfire Gem, especially for powerful enchantments, it is often preferred. The gem's affinity to magic allows the enchantment to take hold quicker and more easily.

Permanent Installations

The Star Seekers have been using big Starfire Gems to power their permanent magical wards and protections for eons. So far, none of these enchantments failed. The inherent connection of the gems to the magic of the world allows it to power even the most powerful spells.

Powering Constructs

While the Star Seekers prohibits using the gems in this way, this hasn't stopped tinkerers to investigate their use in powering constructs and clockwork. So far it seems like one of the most promising solutions, but research has been slow with the limit supply of Starfire Gems from the black market.

Very nicely done Satrium - well written also - I might be "borrowing" some of the ideas here for my current campaign.

Oh, I love the idea, and I love how you've made them exclusive. They seem like a great reward, first in the form of a single hard-won gem, and then maybe a more regular supply when you have really proved yourself.   This article also reminded me of my love of crystallized tears, now I have some ideas for a condition for Solaris!

Thank you! My players actually got two gems as a reward sometimes and are slowly building up relations with the Star Seekers. So we'll have to see if they get more at some point.   I'm glad I could remind you of some ideas. Looking forward to reading about it!

These are so cool. I love how rare they are. I don't think I'd ver be able to bring myself to use one if I owned one. XD

Thanks!   I've handed out two of these gems to my D&D group a couple months ago, so far they haven't dared to use them yet, so you are not alone in your thinking :D

GEM PRETTY

Thank you!   I REALLY should have expected somebody to ask that question, and I'm not surprised it was you!   Let's quickly answer that. Pretty Gem + Big boom = Even bigger boom, but with magic I'd rather be quite far away from that to be honest.

Nice succinct article here! They should so lovely, it's a shame they have to be destroyed to be used!

Thank you!   Yeah, you'll have to destroy these gems, but you could also just be like my players and use the "we might need this later" mentality and never break them!

My players keep everything. They live to pull them out a year later after I've forgotten they exist to surprise and chagrin me!!

These sound neat! Also: I love the little D&D callout box in the sidebar. It's well-styled, succinct, and to the point.
