Whittlestead

Whittlestead is a large town in the eastern Snowcloak Dominion, nestled in the dense and frostbitten Hoarwood forest east of the Valdraith Peaks. It has long thrived on the harvesting and processing of Hoarwood, a rare and resilient timber sought after for its incredible durability. The town’s rugged and disciplined woodcutters once worked in harmony with the mystical Hoarwood Grove. However, since the grove was conquered, the townsfolk have been forced into unsustainable over-harvesting under the king’s command, a grim reality that weighs heavily on them.

Whittlestead is a town of unwilling betrayal, caught between the weight of tradition and the harsh demands of survival. Its people are strong, but their hearts are torn between loyalty and guilt, and as the forest thins, so too does the town’s patience for tyranny.

Government

Whittlestead is overseen by Steward Harken Thryss, a grizzled and pragmatic leader who served as a woodsman in his youth. He is deeply loyal to the King, but he is no tyrant. He understands the townspeople’s sorrow over the over-harvesting, yet his hands are tied.

The King’s overseer, Velmar Dain, a ruthless tax collector, ensures that quotas are met. He does not care for the traditions of Whittlestead and punishes any attempts at timber smuggling or working outside of royal decrees.

Defences

Whittlestead is not heavily fortified, but it has both a local militia and a royal garrison to ensure that the king’s will is enforced. The militia consists of seasoned woodsmen, rangers, and hunters. They protect against bandits, beasts, and the harsh winters but avoid unnecessary conflict with the king’s soldiers.

The garrison is a small but disciplined force of thirty royal soldiers stationed in the town to ensure that lumber quotas are met and that the town does not rebel. Their presence is resented, but their power is undeniable.

A watchtower at the town’s edge overlooks the forest, keeping an eye on both natural threats and signs of insurrection.

Industry & Trade

Whittlestead is a timber town first and foremost, and its entire economy is built around cutting, processing, and shipping wood from the Hoarwood. The lumber is exported to Cromital for spellwork and construction, or by barges up the Hoarwood River to Graepor for ships, fortifications, and weapon crafting. Whittlestead itself is famous for its carvings, and the most skilled craftsmen can create enchanted staves, bows, and even fine furniture from the wood.

Though not a coastal town, Whittlestead fishermen brave the cold waters of the Hoarwood River to catch fish to supplement the town’s diet. Hunters also provide food, tracking large elk and winter boars through the snowy wilderness.

Guilds and Factions

The Woodcutters’ Guild, once a proud organization dedicated to balance and sustainability, is now divided between those who wish to resist and those who fear the King’s wrath.

Some of the older woodsmen still light candles near the edge of the forest, whispering apologies for the trees they are forced to cut down. This quiet act of defiance is done under the cover of night, as acknowledging sorrow too openly can be seen as treasonous. Others are more open in their defiance by sabotaging logging efforts or supplying the Eladrin instead of the Dominion. Younger workers, having never known the old ways, believe the elders are holding the town back.

Faith

Whittlestead is a town of quiet faith, where the people once honored the Divine alongside the Eladrin but now struggle under oppression. While no great altars stand, many keep small personal shrines in their homes, dedicated to the Divine. In the deeper parts of the forest, small cults have formed, whispering to ancient spirits of the woods, seeking protection or vengeance for what has been done to the land. These gatherings are considered dangerous and are punishable by exile or death if discovered.

Tourism

Life in Whittlestead revolves around the timber industry and the changing seasons. Woodsmen, carvers, and traders gather in the evenings at the "The Hollow Stump," a rough-hewn tavern where the ale is strong, and the talk is stronger. The tavern’s great hearth burns Hoarwood, filling the air with its signature silver-white embers.

Visitors enjoy participating in the Timberlord’s Festival, An annual event where woodsmen compete in wood-cutting contests, log rolling, and hunting challenges. It once honored the balance between Whittlestead and the Hoarwood Grove, but since the grove’s fall, the festival has become a bittersweet affair, with fewer Eladrin attending.
