House Braendholt

House Braendholt is one of the newest noble houses in the Snowcloak Dominion, having been granted title and land less than a generation ago for service during the final unification wars under King Philus Eber. Formed from a ragtag band of elite mercenaries, House Braendholt earned its name—and the grudging respect of older houses—through brutal efficiency and unwavering loyalty to the crown.

Stationed in Whittlestead, Braendholt’s holdings are modest but growing. Their land lies along the frost-steeped trade roads east of the city, where they’ve begun building fortified outposts and barracks, valuing defense and movement over opulence.

Their methods are unorthodox, practical, and sometimes dishonorable by older standards, which has placed them in conflict with House Harvundr, whose honor-bound traditions they consider inefficient and inflexible. Still, Braendholt has proven itself capable, with growing influence among young commanders and military pragmatists.

Structure

  • Lord Varek Braendholt (Founder and Patriarch) – A former mercenary captain, Varek is scarred, shrewd, and decisive. He earned his title after holding the southern pass against a Skjolgardt raid, and now seeks to grow his house through tactical alliances and raw results.
  • Kaelin Braendholt (His eldest daughter) – A military commander known for her precision and innovation, Kaelin is a rising star in the Dominion’s army. Rumors say she is being considered for a generalship, though her loyalty to her house may come before that of the crown.
  • “Stitch” Halvor (War-Medic and Strategist) – Once a battlefield surgeon, now a councilor to Varek. Halvor uses his knowledge of both anatomy and logistics to plan skirmishes and advise on territory control. Gruff but loyal.
  • Druffan Braendholt (Younger son) – A charismatic and flamboyant duelist who enjoys rubbing elbows with Cromital's nobles. Though his martial skill is questionable, he’s proving valuable as a public face for a rough-hewn house.

Public Agenda

Where older houses value bloodlines and honor, Braendholt prizes skill, grit, and adaptability. Nobility means nothing without competency, and most of their leadership is earned on the field, not inherited through birth.

House Braendholt is known for:

  • Recruiting outsiders: Exiles, outlanders, and even reformed criminals have risen through their ranks, if they prove themselves loyal and useful.
  • Meritocracy in action: Ranks and privilege are awarded based on results, not heritage.
  • Warband structure: Instead of knights and squires, they operate in small, semi-autonomous companies with flexible command.
  • Cold pragmatism: They have been known to withdraw or bargain rather than die for honor. This earns scorn from traditionalists but keeps them alive.
