Magic
Magic in the world of Logos is an intricate art tied directly to the Weave, the ordered source of energy created by the Divine. All magic, no matter its source or purpose, is the result of manipulating the Weave, causing it to spill through the boundaries of the world into the physical realm. Though the Divine forbade His creation from binding themselves to the Weave, their defiance opened the floodgates of magical knowledge and power, shaping civilizations, cultures, and conflicts.
The Three Major Patterns of Manipulation
The Weave can be manipulated through distinct patterns, each representing a different philosophy and method of interaction with its energy. These patterns define the primary disciplines of magic in Logos: Arcane, Natural, and Spiritual.
Arcane Patterns
Arcane manipulation of the Weave relies on discipline, intellect, and study or innate gifts. It is the most structured and deliberate form of spellcasting, channeling the Weave through precise rituals, spoken incantations, and gestures.
Practitioners:
- Wizards: Scholars who study magical texts and experiment with the Weave, pushing the boundaries of known spellcraft.
- Bards: Artists who weave the Weave into their music and performance, creating spells through art and emotion.
- Sorcerers: Those born with an innate connection to the Weave, whose power is instinctive rather than learned.
- Warlocks: Individuals who make pacts with entities (often dragons, devils, or other beings) for arcane power, borrowing manipulation techniques granted by their patrons.
Arcane magic is often seen as dangerous and unpredictable by those who do not wield it, as it directly manipulates the world’s fabric without relying on natural order or divine oversight.
Natural Patterns
Natural magic comes from observing and imitating the innate patterns of nature, reflecting the Divine’s original design for the world. Practitioners of natural magic see the Weave as a living force within all things, and their spellcasting aligns with the rhythms of the earth, sky, and sea.
Practitioners:
- Druids: Masters of nature who draw upon the Weave to preserve and shape the natural world, often taking on forms of animals or controlling the elements.
- Rangers: Hunters and scouts who channel the Weave to enhance their senses and forge a connection with the wild.
- Monks: Martial artists who manipulate the Weave to bolster their physical energies and focus.
Natural magic is respected by many species, particularly the Eladrin, who see it as a harmonious extension of their stewardship over the natural world.
Spiritual Patterns
Spiritual magic is distinct from miracles, as it is not directly facilitated by the Divine but rather comes from the faith and devotion of its practitioners. By aligning themselves with divine truths, they manipulate the Weave in ways that mimic the Divine’s power, though at a smaller scale.
Practitioners:
- Clerics: Individuals who study religious rituals and channel the Weave through prayer and devotion, often healing or protecting others.
- Paladins: Warriors whose oaths bind them to spiritual causes, allowing them to wield the Weave in battle for smiting foes or shielding allies.
Spiritual magic is often revered for its closeness to the Divine, though it remains a shadow of true miracles, which can only occur by the Divine’s direct intervention.
The Schools of Magic
Magic in Logos is further classified by its effects, commonly referred to as the Eight Schools of Magic. Each of these schools have their own applications, philosophies, and cultural perceptions.
- Abjuration: Protective magic, used to shield, ward, or dispel harmful effects. It is often practiced by spiritual casters and is widely respected across species.
- Conjuration: Magic that summons creatures, objects, or energy. While powerful, it is viewed with suspicion by some due to its association with devils and otherworldly entities.
- Divination: Magic of knowledge and foresight, used to uncover truths or predict the future. This magic is most dangerous to the caster, as many a diviner has lost their mind contending with the revelations of the future.
- Enchantment: Magic that influences the minds and wills of others. The Perla rely heavily on this school to remain hidden, though it is viewed with suspicion or disdain by other species.
- Evocation: The manipulation of raw energy to create destructive or elemental effects. It is a favorite among battle mages, such as Human wizards and Owlin spellcasters.
- Illusion: Magic that deceives the senses, creating false images or sounds. The Perla are masters of this school, though it is sometimes dismissed as trickery by others.
- Necromancy: Magic that manipulates life and death. It is almost universally despised due to many finding it unnatural, possibly even facilitating a corruption of the corpse. However the Eladrin see it as a natural part of the cycle of life, little different than allowing the corpse to decompose to feed the next generation of plants or fungi.
- Transmutation: Magic that alters physical properties, whether of objects, creatures, or the environment. It is practice widely by species like the Plasmoids, who see it as a means of reversing their condition.
The Mystery of the Weave
Though the manipulation of the Weave is well-studied, much remains unknown. The existence of other patterns and schools of magic is suspected, and explorers of the Weave constantly seek to uncover these secrets. However, delving too deeply can be dangerous, as the Weave can be damaged or corrupted, producing unpredictable effects.
Some scholars whisper of forbidden patterns, such as those used by devils or dragons, which twist the Weave for destructive or selfish ends. Others speak of lost schools, magical arts forgotten to time or hidden by the Divine for reasons unknown.
The Fragile Balance
Magic is both a gift and a curse in Logos, a reflection of the world's defiance and the Divine’s enduring grace. The Weave, though forbidden, is now inseparable from creation, and its power shapes the destiny of all species. Yet, as the Weave is manipulated, damaged, and explored, the balance grows ever more fragile, leaving the world teetering on the edge of discovery and destruction.
