Solar War Military Conflict in Libertas | World Anvil

Solar War

The Solar War broke out in E2.Y625. It remains the only major war in the history of Libertan colonisation. The conflict stretched for six years, and was fought between the The Symposium and the Kirin Triumvirate over control of the dyson satellite network around Libertas' star. An estimated one million military and civilian casualties were recorded. The resulting loss by the Symposium shattered its already tenuous control of Libertan space, leading to the foundation of the Banners.

History

Background

The conflict's roots derived from the Energy Crisis E2.Y624. Libertas had experienced rapid expansion followed the repeal of birth control laws a century earlier. This booming population quickly outgrew the production of the gas mines over the system's Jovian. The Symposium has been importing energy from the Solare for decades, but prices rose yearly. In 622, the Symposium refused to meet the new price of energy.   The resulting energy crisis led major cities such as Tokyo City to ration energy, and over a hundred private space stations had to be evacuated when their supplies of fusion materials ran out.   The Symposium blamed the crisis on the Solare "extortion", and after negotiations broke down, war was declared.

The Conflict

The Solare were a relatively undefended people until the war began, and their only advantage was distance. The inhospitable planet of Fortuna offered no resources, and made a forward base for the Symposium difficult to establish.   The trading corporation the Kirin Triumvirate quickly came to the Solare's defense, providing their trading fleet and captains to help defend the Solarian people.
