Tokyo City Settlement in Libertas | World Anvil

Tokyo City

Tokyo City stands below a rolling plane of ice twenty kilometers thick. It is a city that mixed together a legacy of hardship, triumph, and loss to create the metropolis it is today. From the heady heights of the great towers where the cream of Libertan society gathers, to a seedy underbelly, Tokyo is famed for its beauty, culture and ruthless streets.   Tokyo is the seat of The Symposium, the governing council of Libertan space. It also serves as one of Libertas' two great economic center, competing every step of the way with Seoul City. Where Seoul boasts of its manufacturing prowess, the great fashion houses, holostudios and music labels of Tokyo dictate the cultural life of the solar system, and create the template for the Libertan way of life.

History

Foundation

Tokyo City was founded by the first settlers of Libertas. The city is named for Tokyo, the great Shangri-la ark ship that crashed upon Libertas at the end of its centuries long journey; the ship itself was named for an ancient semi-mythical Earth city. The unique geographic challenges of Libertas shaped the way Tokyo was settled. The first settlers bored deep into the depths of the ice, and established Tokyo underneath, where the oceans buffet the city.   The settlement of Tokyo was led by Admiral Ada Wynters, the Tokyo's esteemed commander. She was born to the Wynters dynasty, who had led the Tokyo for generations, but was a singularly capable and organised leader who had earned the respect of her people when she captained the fraught landing of their ship.   Based on geographic surveys, she established Tokyo near the north pole of Libertas - where the ice was more stable. Leading an expedition of four hundred engineers, they established a surface habitat and began construction of the surface to sea elevator that would be their cities arterial exit.

Factionalisation

Early conflict over the city's settlement arose when members of the Blackraven family - who held the position of Chief Psychologist - began to raise concerns with staying on Libertas. They argued that it was foolhardy to settle on such a hostile world. They gained sympathisers in the general population, and in E2.Y002 the dynasties matriarch Lydia Blackraven attempted to lead a coup against Admiral Wynters.   A bloody battle erupted between the two factions supporters, and during the conflict the elevator was destroyed by a bomb. Both factions blamed the other for the blast. However, the true culprit didn't matter, for Lydia had lost much of her support as a result and her conspirators poisoned her soon after and surrendered to Wynters.

The city rises

Tokyo was formally established in E2.Y007, when the first under-ocean habitat was completed. The city would be expanded over the following years, and The Tokyo ark was formally abandoned in E2.Y014, when it was deemed that the city could support the entire population. The colony ship was stripped of its reactors and AI, both of which were relocated to the city.

Early years

The colony's early years were marked by hardship. While waiting for the cities new vat-farms to begin to produce enough food, the city had undergone a shockingly fast population boom. The result meant that demand outstripped supply. To stem the rising crisis, ship command established The Symposium in E2.Y037 as the civilian government of the colony. They passed the Birth Control Act in E2.Y039 as one of their first acts, mandating licenses to reproduce.

Architecture

Tokyo is built far below the great ice sheets of Libertas, secured to the ice beds and hanging down like a great chandelier. An environmental dome surrounds the vast city, expanded in many places as Libertas grew. Making it look like a great collection of pastel snowglobes from afar. The interior architecture of Tokyo follows the fashions of modern architecture. As a thriving metropolis, the latest in fashionable buildings are often being erected as the city expands. The result is a diverse mixture of styles. The Libertan love of pastel colours has dominated the upper city through the centuries however, earning the city the moniker of The Pastel City for the pinks that dominate its skyline.
She's big, she's bold. She's the party capital. Rio in her heyday had nothing on our grand dame.

Lovely entry Isaac! Been a long while since I got to read some of your work (my fault)   I love the idea of Tokyo being a near mystical city, certainly garners my interest into the history of your world.   What are the different districts like? You mention it in travel advisory, and it made me want to know more! What does the city export? It sounds primarily like tourist and recreation?
