Malgrii Empire

The first Empire. This empire is made up of three kingdoms, Valkra, Brëag, and Malkor. In the histories, it is written that there was an extremely ambitious and powerful general who took over the kingdom of Malkor, killing the king and destroying his family. Through intrigue and superiors forces he then quickly managed to defeat Valkra. The king of Valkra fled. From there, it was a matter of diplomacy and contracts and in a matter of months Brëag become a part of the empire, it’s king happily in service to the Empire. But the emperor was not satisfied and wanted Nalkon as well.

It was here that the king of Valkra had fled to. His allies and friends in Kingdom of Nalkon had no desire to become part of the empire and the Great Malgrii War broke out. After many years the emperor was killed, ending the war. The Valkran king was restored and took over as the emperor of all Malgrii, having won the last battle. A few legends say something different. According to the spoken stories, the first emperor was a devil or demon called up by a wizard. And this devil was too powerful for the wizard to control, thus he gained freedom in the world. Some of the stories say the wizard was a close adviser to the Malkor king, and this is what allowed the devil quick access. Others say the wizard was on the war council of the kingdom. It matters not which is true, all the stories agree that the devil took the guise of an officer in the armies, and from there quickly rose to power.

The devil had little magical powers but was very intelligent and could not be harmed by mortal weapons. And he could call on fiends and demons to do his bidding from time to time. Once he was powerful enough in the military, it was simple for him to take over as the king. And to continue to rise in power from there.

The stories tell that the only way to stop the empire’s expansion was to defeat the emperor-devil himself. This was accomplished through the help of four powerful wizards: a clergyman in the service of Ga-La, a necromancer who worshiped Necros, a sorcerer from Kingdom of Nalkon, and the magician-king of Valkra. Together these four managed to trap the devil and confine him in a crystal stone, where he is still imprisoned. They could not kill the devil, as it is a true immortal being. Nor could they banish it to its own plane, as its magics were powerful enough to prevent that. Only their combined will and the four different approaches in magical attack was enough to defeat it.

Now an elected emperor, who is chosen from the highest nobility, rules the three kingdoms. Those who choose the emperor are the three kings, and each of their two highest Councillors, one of whom must be a wizard, and the other cannot have any wizardly powers. These nine may elect any person they see fit, and the choice must be unanimous. If one of the kings is chosen, he forfeits his kingdom and his heir then becomes the new king of that kingdom. The emperor holds only a small amount of land to call his own in each of the kingdoms, and is more of a political and military leader, uniting the three kingdoms for economic and political strength.

Each of the kingdoms is permitted autonomy in governing the local people and internal trade. They are not permitted to have any form of trade restrictions between them, including tariffs and taxes on goods moving between the three kingdoms. Additionally, any subsidies to trade in one kingdom must be approved by the emperor and must demonstrate that they will not give any trade advantage over another area in the empire. The empire controls international trade – it is not controlled by the individual kingdoms. This means that trade taxes on incoming goods is taxed at the empirical level, rather than the kingdom level. The empire also controls a military force made up from each of the kingdoms. While each kingdom is permitted its own military forces, they are never to rival that of the empire, and are subservient to it. A kingdom army may be called into service of the empire at a moment’s notice. Usually this means that men from one kingdom will have to serve in another in order to assist in whatever troubles there may be that are too sensitive for the local military to handle, or where the local forces are not enough. While the empire has not tried to expand its borders in many years, and is at peace with its neighbours, this does not mean that it is not prepared for whatever may occur. Especially since the peace and neutrality between Malgrii and Nalkon has always been precarious.

In all areas of Malgrii Lainshoan is only spoken as a trade language. Deutcher and Gnaric are the native languages spoken by most natives of the Malgrii Empire. Valkran, a language similar to German, is one of the native tongues spoken in Valkra. Most of the people who speak one of these languages can understand the gist of what someone speaking the other is saying.
