Aodios

the heart of darkness

Aodios, officialy Greater Aodios is the capital of the Nefadric Empire and stands atop the high Viirc Mesa, affording it a commanding view of the surrounding terrain. Thousands of skulls impaled on blackend lances hint at reason why this sprawling metropolis carries the nickname 'the heart of darkness'.

Checkpoint
"Have your documentation at the ready and expect to be searched." blurts the gate warden in a strict tone. The routinated monotone tone makes it obvious that he has done nothing else than barking orders at travelers wishing to enter Aodios since the sun has risen this morning. Yet his eyes diligently inspect every single person, animal and vehicle that passes him on thier exhausting way up the access slope. Nearing the gigantuan gate, the intervall at which guards are stationed shortens and booths are set up. Entering Aodios requires an extraodinary ammount of adminestrative work and can be surprisingly costly.

Demographics

Being a resident of Aodios means to be someone. From the lowest scum to the highest noblility, all have the sacred honnor of living in the same city as thier holy grand emperor. For both millenia that Aodios has stood the test of time, the influence of the emperor has shaped every aspect of life directly and thus has been a major driving force for economic growth, innovation, development and culture. From Aodios progress spreads all throughout the Nefadric Empire, reminding nefadric citizens even in the remotest corners of Kreworis of the grandure of the emperor and Aodios.

Government

Power

Aodios is the capital of the Nefadric Empire and for that reason is home to the personal residence (or at least the access portal to the aforementioned residence) of the Grand Emperor Naram Seluku, the choosen one of Jubix himself.   At the head of the civil goverment is the Aodian Metropolitan Council. On the Aodian Metropolitan Council are the Emperor, the Lord Mayors of Greater Aodios As oppossed to one might expect, the Aodian Metropolitan Council only has limited autonomy since these mayors and adminestrators do not own the land. Instead they tend to it in the name of the Emperor, having mostly adminestrative, bureaucratic and representative duties.   A Lord Mayor within Aodios is responsible for an entire vertical level of Aodios and represents it on the Aodian Metropolitan Council. Exception to this the Foundry, the Royal Army Grounds and Necropolis, they are controlled by thier own officals and/or institutions being equal to the Lord Mayors within the aodian hieracy and on the Aodian Metroplitan Council. Note: The Aodian Industrial Board as an entity has one vote on the Aodian Metropolitan Council, not every board member individually.

  • The Foundry is goverend by the Aodian Industrial Board which represents the resident companies and guilds.
  • The Royal Army Grounds are governed by the Lord Marshall.
  • The Necropolis is governed by the Archmagnus of the High Necromantic College of Aodios.

Below the Lord Mayors are a few Mayors in control of larger districts, for example the individual defence rings of the Main Body or individual levels of the Underground city.

The Tunnels

Follow the underground sprawl, the charcoal gang markings, the scratched windows and soon you'll find a hole. - Down the hole with my dog on a leash, broad shoulders, mean face, just give me a reason and we'll argue. Nobody cares about what happens inside the tunnels. Here you can see, do and take anything, ... . Here, in the dark Tunnel, you instantly forget how fast the world spins beyond the tunnels.

Defences

Position

Virrc Mesa

The Viirc Mesa, on top of which Aodios is built, has very steep slope that are impassible to conventional siege engines and need to be pain stakeingly climbed by infantry - however heavy and extremely nasty underbrush of the Omyhx thicket has been allowed to sprawl up the whole slope untill it reached the outermost wall. Multiple rows of fraises, sharp upwards pointing metal stakes have since been swallowed and are now hidden within the brush pose a grave hazard to incoming troops, essentialy rendering the approach impassible for infantry too.

Omyhx Thicket

The Omyhx Thicket wraps arround most of the Viirc Mesa and forms a natural barrier. While the Nefadrim have learnt to co-exist with the perilous thicket through the invention of the purple candle, anyone oblivious to this invalueable asset when trying to pass even near the trees will be in for a nasty suprise when they learn about the hazzards and viciousness of the forrest.

Fortifications

Aodios is protected by state of the art technology, multiple highly developed fortification complexes that make up defence layers which are designed to be able to allow the defenders to fight for every centimeter of aodian ground and then fall back safely to the next layer of defence.

The Grand Walls of Aodios

Proud fly the ornate standarts and banners of the Nefadric Empire ontop of the oppressing black walls, just above the grizzly trophies that draw the eyes of thier dark gods. Tens of thousands of ancient and fresh skulls impaled upon blackend lances, countless bones decorate the walls arcording to the morbid nefadric understanding of art, similar to the carved grotesque faces that mock attackers from amongst the icons and runes that ooze the blackest of magic on the wall. A second set of blackend lances petrudes from the wall, jaggered with nasty barbs and angled towards anyone foolish enough to risk climbing the wall, stand as a dire warning in contrast to the semmingly cheering devilish carvings. Flanked by massive pillars so masterfuly carved they are a disgusting display of wealth, a provocative insult to any besiger due to felt supremacy of the nefadrim. On those pillars perch huge gargyoles, sentinals that never tire, clad in ornate armor and leaning on heavy weapons like zweihanders and waraxes, they always stand at the ready to repulse the enemies of the Nefadric Empire.

Artillery Emplacements

Runic Wards
The runic wards are inscribed upon the foundation of each layer of the Aodian Great Walls. These were a gift by the dwarven lord of the Black Rock Great-Fortress. Work began in 1481AR and finished within the same year. Shortly after the unification of the Aodian Metropolitan Area.   The runic wards were updated with a improved set of advanced runes in 1635AR.

Regional Defences

Ubodian Underground Tunnel Network

Far, far below the ground, there is a well guarded supply highway. Originaly these tunnels were used to transport the heavy granite blocks from the Blackrock Frontier to Aodios, hence the control has been handed to the Extents Mining Group and have flourished ever since. The tunnels have been modernized 1403 from to 1474 to accomodate a railway that connects Aodios not only to the Blackrock Frontier but the whole Blackrock Mountainrange, even up to the Black Fortress and recently the railway has been extended south to connect Ylendiff and the Drakeforge Military Harbour. Everything from industrial goods, food, equipment and ammunition are shipped in bulk across the major cities of Ubos. Should the need arise additional soldiers and reinforcements would be shipped by the railway aswell.

The tunnels can be segment by nearly thrity, half-meter thick, solid steel gates and guarded by the Extents Mining Group's own elite unit, the Blackguard. Access to these tunnels is heavily restricted and goods, which are not empire owned, that are supposed to be shipped by the train, don't even get near the tunnels without proper documentation. Even then they have to undergo a lengthy in depth search.
Should all defence measures fail, there is a doomsday protocoll which declares that in case an enemy army should gain access to the tunnels and try to force thier way through the gates with noteworthy success, any compromised tunnels and connected segments shall be collapsed by high powered destruction spells, liberaly.

Ubodian Signal Regiment

The Ubos Signal Regiment maintains a network of forward, remotuscope equipped, watch towers and signal fires to provide advanced reconaisance and early enemy detection, thereby dasticly extending the time the region has to prepare before potential threats. To improve regional comunication aside from signal fires the Ubos Signal Regiment have dovecotes and stables at every major city and post station.   Other responsiblities of the Ubos Signal Regiment include running postal system of the region, printing and distribution of the Imperial Newsletter as well as providing herolds and city cryers.

Imperial Intelligence Corps

The Imperial Intelligence Corps is a nefadric agency which is in essence a secret police force that maintains a counter espionage and surveillance network, performs covert actions as well as psycological operations. Field agents have access to plentyful resourcess, deep coffers and are fueled by zealous fanaticism. Field agents lean on the ubodian infrastructure that has been fitted with inconsipicous safehouses and secret bases of operation to support them in thier duties.   On occasion field agents are assigent as investigators directly to a local watch, constable or gendarmery of the settlement to aid them with extraordinarily difficult cases or when local tensions grow to reassure controll.

Industry & Trade

Primary sector of the economy

Agriculture

Due to Aodios immense size, there have been many food related issues accross the two century long history of Aodios. While Aodios is situated in an impenterable position, it is unsuiteable for conventional farming. This has lead to innovative solutions and groundbreaking advancements within the field of agriculture, engineering and pionering new inventions such as subterran farms, mushroom cultures and hot houses.

Secondary sector of the economy

Metal Industry

Aodios has a massive industrial complex, the Foundry. It is north of the Main Body and is by far the most advanced and also the largest concentration of heavy industry in any single place. Most prominent is the metal related industry within the Foundry due to the proximity to the Blackrock Mountain Range, though there also exist workshops and manufacturies that are not related to the goods of the Blackrock Frontier.   Aodios can create miracleous machines from wonderous metals, where others even lack the means seperate the ore from stone, nevermind the smelting and forgeing. Dozens of highly specialized furnaces and smelteries are to be found within the Foundry Ward, some types are: Blast Furnaces, Injection Furnaces and Pressure Furnaces.

Magical Goods

Due to the many universities, magical institutes, colleges, etc. there is a large supply of magical goods and supplies for magic users of all kinds. Many scholars create spell scrolles, some as thier main source of income, others on the side to earn a few coins to pay thier tuition fees.

Alchemical Goods

For the same reason there are many suppliers of magical goods, there are just as many if not more inhabitants working in the alchemical industry, hence it is the second largest industry of the Foundry. This type of industry used to be extremely dangerous in the past as thier production was unregulated and many toxic byproducts were ignored as best as they could while they killed hunderets. These bussnisses have received generous subsidies for the vast military applications thier products have, ever since thier inception which is why they enjoyed high popularity and fourished nevertheless.   These toxic byproducts has lead the Nefadrim to create heinous chemical agents, when they realized the potential in warefare. Now many are produced in bulk. The most infamous of them is the Balefire or Omyhx Lotous Concentrate.

Tertiary sector of the economy

Magical Services

Infrastructure

Aodios is devided into three distinctive levels; these are from top to bottom, the flying rings, the mesa level main city body with the Foundry, the Royal Army Grounds and Necropolis attached to it and lastly the far stretched, underground city of the lower level.

The Grand Circus

A man walks into a tavern and tells the barman that he feels depressed, that life feels rough and heartless, says that he feels left behind in a dangerous world. The barman replies that treatment is simple, the grand jester 'Lambelin' would be in town and that he would cheer him up.

The man starts to cry. "But Sir, I am Lambelin"
— Cynical joke about Lambelin, famous jester of the Grand Circus

Architecture

The Architecture varries depending on the district, but in general structures are built in the sturdy militaristic Nefadric architectural style. This is especially true for the districts on the Viirc Mesa, there the building code requires buildings to be built similar to miniature keeps, complete with arrowslits and flat roofs with crenalations. The individual buildings don't differ very much from one another and in fact can't, because the building code of the Mesa level is not a guideline but rather a catalouge of approved building elements, for the few of the upper class that are able to afford and are lucky enough to get one of the elusive empty plots.

Styles throught Aodios

  • Low (Urban) Nefadric
  • High (Urban) Nefadric
  • Ecclestial Low Nefadric
  • Ecclestial High Nefadric
  • Militant Nefadric

What is similar across all districts is the dark grey, Ubos signature, granite blocks from the Blackrock Frontier. It is ubiquitous, as it is the base of every single building across the city and even the region, for it's hardness and longevity.

Enurrian Ridge

The Mesa Level

The Mesa Level consists of the main body, the Foundry, the Royal Army Grounds and the Necropolis.

The Flying Rings

In the Flying Rings buildings are constructed in the decadent high Nefadric architectural style, while they retain many militaristic features, they are far off the pragmatic and utilitarian Low Nefadric style. Buildings are constructed with the goal of creating a status symbol first and a small personal fortress second. The building code offers some leeway to accomodate this, however, also prevents anyone but the richest to live in the Flying Rings.

Ubos is the heavily fortified capital province of the The Nefadric Empire. It is a center of innovation, site of living nefadric history and a true beacon of jubixian faith. It's regional development is astounding, providing a vast number of services.

The great ubodian region stands proud and vast, so that all may gaze in wonderment.

Though Ubos is not a paradise by far. Due to the high population, food is expensive and in part depended on external supply. And while efforts have been made, disease and plagues are not uncommon within the cities. Magical Hazards like the perilous Omyhx Thicket and evil weather are horrors that are beyond the imagination of those not native to the region.
