Calemdar College of Magic

The Calemdarian College of Magic is a vastly renowned and important institution given the task and responsibility for educating and ensuring the safety of all magic-wielding individuals. Within the now dissolved Calemdarian Republic, and now the Empire of Korrisia the College is charged with the responsibility of safeguarding the empire from any arcane threats.    The College is broken up into 8 Orders of a particular practice or realm of magic. Each Order has a centralized building to allow anyone to contact a Patriarch (head of a college) as needed. Within the walls of each college, one can find numerous apprentices, magisters, and fully trained wizards who are licensed and capable to practice magic and teach.   The Orders of Magic are the lores, personalities, philosophies, ideals, rituals, traditions, and goals that the College imparts to their apprentices. But the Orders are also far-reaching, highly secretive societies with distinct identities and agendas. Imperial Magisters claim that the essence of their Orders are not found in buildings or dusty tomes but in the actual pursuit, manipulation, and embodiment of the Winds of Magic that lie at the heart of their Orders’ Lores.

The Eight Orders

There are eight magical colleges, each that focus on different realms of magic. It is said that whomever can fully master all eight colleges can manipulate the very fabric of reality.
  • Light Order - Magic Order dedicated to the Lore of Light
  • Celestial Order - Magic Order dedicated to the Lore of the Heavens
  • Gold Order - Magic Order dedicated to the Lore of Metal
  • Jade Order - Magic Order dedicated to the Lore of Life
  • Amber Order - Magical Order dedicated to the Lore of Beasts
  • Bright Order - Magical Order dedicated to the Lore of Fire
  • Grey Order - Magical Order dedicated to the Lore of Shadows
  • Amethyst Order - Magical Order dedicated to the Lore of Death
Admittance to a particular college is not decided upon by the student, but by the Searchmages and the Entry Scholars, who meet with and register each individual student brought to them during "The Finding".

Structure

The Supreme Patriarch is the highest office in the College of Magic. Chosen by vote between all of the Orders' Patriarchs, this office holds the responsibility of overseeing all Orders and ensuring that the mission of the College is fulfilled. Supreme Patriarchs rule for as long as they are able to hold the seat. Every eight years, a wizard may challenge the Supreme Patriarch in a duel for the position.      Below the Supreme Patriarch are the Patriarchs of each Order in the College. These Patriarchs are charged with the management and oversight of their Order. They dispatch Search Wizards when new apprentices are needed. They deal out justice when a member of their Order breaks the laws and codes of the Mages College. Patriarchs are also powerful and gifted wizards, chosen by vote from within the Order among all fully trained wizards or named by the Supreme Patriarch in times of crisis when a time does not allow for a vote.

Public Agenda

The prime function of the College of Magic is to provide education to those with the capability and desire to utilize the Winds of Magic. The College also takes in those who are surprisingly gifted in order to train them appropriately and to ensure the outside world will not be impacted by their misunderstanding of the power they hold.

Law & Order

The College is also charged with handling those who misuse the Winds of Magic to suit dangerous or dark needs. If someone infringes the Articles of Magic or their Order’s own constitution, it is a matter for the Colleges to deal with; although, the Witch Hunters often try to lay claim to this responsibility. The Colleges do not take this duty lightly; to do so would be the first step to their own corruption and downfall. Punishment can range from flogging to exile, to execution, or worst of all for a spellcaster, Pacification. Pacification, as opposed to execution, is a punishment reserved for those who are found guilty of Gross Misconduct, Traitorous Acts, and most of all for Defaming the Good Orders of the Colleges of Magic.   Essentially, if an individual embraces the Dark Arts, rejects their Order and College, becomes a threat to the College or Empire at large, and even more importantly, does something to focus the frightened eyes of the Empire’s public on their actions and therefore the College and Order to which they belong, College authorities always seek to have that individual captured alive. Death is too good for such traitors. The public’s fears that the Colleges do not police their own well enough, or even that the Colleges should not be permitted to exist at all, need to be addressed very visibly. Pacification is the worst possible punishment for a spellcaster, and it takes considerable effort to achieve. Not only is it spoken of in dire tones to young apprentices, the actual processes involved are kept a closely guarded secret.   All Wizards are aware that it involves a type of Aethyric gelding—a cutting away of the part of the soul capable of seeing and casting magic. It is unclear as to whether this involves removal of actual flesh, but the very thought of a sundering of the soul is enough to make all but the most thick-headed recoil. As Wizards progress within their Order, this apprentices’ tale is embellished somewhat with additional facts. Each order seems to have slightly different and conflicting rumors about the process of this mental mutilation, including what happens to the poor unfortunates afterwards. The Amethyst Order simply maintains that the soul in question is allowed to die in accordance with their loudly screamed wishes. Other Orders maintain darker tales of tormented souls entombed within their own skulls or used as fodder. Some believe the fires of the Bright Order’s flaming towers are fed by more than simple spells or enchanted stones.
