Supreme Patriarch

The Calemdar College of Magic is made up of eight distinct Orders charged with the education of spellcasters and protection of Korrisia from those who would wield the Dark Arts to bring harm against the mortal people of the Material Plane. The leader of the the eight orders is known as the Supreme Patriarch (or Supreme Matriarch in case of a female incumbent).    The position is one of great power and responsibility in Korrisia, sought by the most powerful and wise of College Wizards. Every eight years, a wizard who has proven themselves worthy may challenge the incumbent in a magical duel for the position.   The Supreme Patriarch's word is law in all cases of things magic. In Imperial times, the Supreme Patriarch may also overrule or challenge an Imperial Archon of Magic should the need arise. The Supreme Patriarch's rule is broad, but there is often a strong loyalty and protection of their own Order. Often times when a new Supreme Patriarch rises to the role, the Wheel of the Orders of Magic is realigned so that their Order sits at its zenith.

Contesting the Seat

Every eight years, the Patriarchs of all eight orders meet and discuss who shall hold the position of Supreme Patriarch next. This decision is paramount as whomever becomes the next incumbent will have far reaching impacts, even over the very Winds of Magic themselves. The Order of which the Supreme Patriarch belongs will have bolstered powers, as the Winds that benefit that Order will blow more strongly across the Material Plane.    The contest to determine the next Supreme Patriarch takes the form of violent magical duels between the challengers and the incumbent one at a time until a victor is declared. This contest takes place in the Darkstone Hall, an ancient and highly respected magical fortress in the Halcyon Mountains. Some believe the Darkstone Hall is also where the College's most restricted items are kept. One rumored item is a piece of Garenthar's armor, or even an originally written scroll of Wish.
