Young Lee

Teen. Age 15.   Lee Young Jae (Americanized name: Young Lee) Ethnicity: Korean American Asian, nonbinary, but “she/her” conventionally (in the era) Appearance: ragtag pseudo-punky tomboy     Age: Just turned 15 years old a few months ago! In Korean age, would be counted at a 17 year old, but lives in AMERICA, okay, mom?   Trope: Conspiracy Theorist...Aliens, The Truth Is Out There, UFO’s, Area 51, etc.   Motive: Young wants to know things and illuminate the minds of others to the hidden truths all around. But really wants to know things and, at this stage, might not know what exactly to do after gaining knowledge of Alien activity or the occult being real. Would probably barricade themselves into an enclosed area, get on the ham radio, and only come out for library trips.   Fear: Abandonment, being left behind. Young is afraid of being left behind in the dark, ignorant of things and unable to make informed decisions. This may or may not have to do with family trauma. More on this later.   Flaws: (socially awkward, restless) Young is an outsider in her family and an outsider to everyone else--as an awkward Asian teen in the US in the 80’s. They have tried to bridge the gap, but end up babbling esoteric information for everyone else’s good which comes across as...bizarre. Always on the move, always moving part of their body, always scolded for this by Asian mom. Strengths: (rebellious, prepared, skilled at AV/tech/radio) Young has drive and passion to learn and educate. Young is also pretty resourceful, and very hard to deter. Backpack: Young has a large green military surplus duffle that has two straps for backpack style wear. Inside of this, Young keeps all sorts of things that are useful in their pursuit of The Truth: duct tape, hand radios, dog treats, spare batteries, a small multi-tool, arm and leg warmers, notepad, disposable camera, pens and markers, canteen with water, etc.   Appearance: Young has short shaggy hair, and kinda rocks the aesthetic of Data, the Asian kid from the Goonies, mixed with touches of color and whimsy inspired by the underground Japanese femme punk bands. Young is often mistaken for a boy, which isn’t their problem (and secretly doesn’t bother them at all), but is a source of torment from peers as well as parents. Would ideally dress like Rufio from Hook (which is a reference that doesn’t exist yet) or a punk band member, but doesn’t have the resources, support, or social resilience to be that bold. (Androgynous Goonies Asian x Military Surplus Store x Asian Punk Scene)   Personality: Young is enthusiastic and motivated, but very disconnected from almost everyone--while trying rather frequently to share with others what they know and are passionate about, which backfires almost every time. A lot of Young’s personal quirks would be readily explained in modern day by words like “neurodivergent” and “special interest” and “hyperfocus” but Young generally is called a “super freak” and “nerd” instead.   Young is a latchkey kid, and a member of one of the few Asian families in New Pembroke. Everyone expects them to be good at math. Young isn't. Her technical expertise is more practical and hands-on.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Young and their family live in the Green Haven neighborhood. Their house was damaged in the recent fire. They live directly across the street from Barry Bachman, who's house was the source of the fire and was destroyed. Young kind of wants to steal most of Eustacia Booker's tools. Eustacia Booker, for her part, is very protective of Young.
Young, Eustacia Booker, and Hazel Lowrey recently discovered that neighborhood dog, Hairy Jack has magical powers, and they battled the Smiling Man and his hellhounds.

Gender Identity

Non-Binary (but uses she/her pronouns 'cause it's the 80's in a small town)

Social

Family Ties

Family: Young is the middle child. Both an older brother, Han (“Like Han Solo” is his sickeningly charming tagline), and a younger brother, Bo. Their actual Korean Names are Lee Han Jae, Lee Young Jae, and Lee Beom Jae, but the American names that are made easier for English speakers are HAN, YOUNG and BO.
Han is tall, confident, plays instruments AND sports, and always has a lot of friends. He also gets good grades and is charming. He’s the kind of rad that would have made him prom king and QB and all those American-Highschool-was-the-peak-of-my-life tropes, except that he was Asian, so he got to be friends with dudes who filled those roles. He plays piano. Mister and Mrs Lee always ask Young why ‘she’ can’t be more like ‘her’ older brother. Young doesn’t have a good answer for that, but MAYBE Han took up all the tall, good looking, effortlessly charming, smart genes and there wasn’t enough left over for Young. Which then wouldn’t explain Bo either, so that wasn’t a great theory.   Bo is also tall (taller than Young, slightly shorter than Han), also amazing in school, and plays the role of Filial Son to the T. He has a small, steady group of similarly studious friends, and manages to evoke a romantic poet aesthetic without being cheesy. Instead of playing the part of a wild, free-spirited youngest child, he is more of a homebody who likes to ask his parents how they are, brew them tea, have quiet study sessions, and write letters to peer reviewed geologists that sometimes get published in Geological journals. He likes rocks. Their dad likes rocks. They both like rocks. Young likes ROCK MUSIC.   As the resident official black sheep of the family, Young’s wandering and restless tendencies have been a source of issues since toddlerhood. On vacations, Young has been literally left behind as the family drove away on several occasions. On hikes through nature trails, Young has been the one who wandered off and wasn’t found until hours later, returned to the family by other hikers. Young has been left behind enough times while their parents fawned over and paid attention to star genius boys Han and Bo, the maknae (means the official youngest in a group), getting mostly criticisms at failure to excel in school, failing at learning Suzuki violin, failing to act like and dress like a proper girl, and more. Hence the fear of being left behind, abandoned.   Mrs Lee, or Janet Lee would like nothing more than for Young to start wearing dresses, skirts, blouses, and following at least bare minimum requirements for dressing like a “girl.” And says so regularly. Mr Lee grunts in some sort of acknowledgement of this continuous gripe from behind his newspaper every single morning, before Young makes an early escape from the house on the way to school.   Mr Lee Gwang Ho, or “Howard Lee ,” is a CPA, Certified Public Accountant, who does the books for a lot of the local businesses in town, including New Pembroke Construction, the bowling alley, fabric store, and a few more. He does a weekly circuit, picking up receipts and ledgers or sitting in the businesses’ offices to complete the work, and has a large dedicated home office for accounting work. Young mostly feels like he uses his home office to get away from the kids and wife, and take naps with his face under a newspaper...but none of the small businesses complain about Howard’s work, and they highly recommend him to others.   Mrs Lee was born Jeon Seon Mi, and she works hard as a full time homemaker and household manager. She isn’t a stay at home mom, she’s the CEO of the Lee family. She is probably the origin of Young’s own boundless energy, but because she is disciplined and rigorous, with a focus on respectability, she would never have considered that Young’s restless and energetic nature was in any way related to herself.
