John Hathorne the 1st
Colonel (a.k.a. The Hanging Judge)
John Hathorne (August 1641 – May 10, 1717) was a merchant and magistrate of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and Salem, Massachusetts. He is best known for his early and vocal role as one of the leading judges in the Salem witch trials. Hathorne is not known to have repented for his actions. He was a patrilineal ancestor of writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.
In 1692 he oversaw the Salem Witch Trials, alongside magistrate Jonathan Corwin and Deputy Governor Thomas Danforth. Hathorne's were harsh, and he assumed all were guilty. He earned the nickname "The Hanging Judge."
In 1703 he married 16 year old Ophelia. They had 4 children. The three triplets: Purity, Obedience, and Agony, and the baby: John II. The triplets seem to have died around the ages of 8 or 9, but there are no reliable records as to how. Baby John survived. Agony and Purity would later come to be known as The Twins.
Later in the 1690s Hathorne followed in his father's military footsteps and became more involved in the colonial military activities of King William's War, leading forces in the 1696 Siege of Fort Nashwaak (present-day Fredericton, New Brunswick). He continued to be active in the colonial militia, and was promoted to colonel in 1711. He was also finally appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Joseph Dudley, a seat he held until 1711.
He died in Salem in 1717, and is interred in the Burying Point Cemetery along with a number of his descendants. Ophelia is believed to have moved to New Pembroke with her baby, John Jr., along with a few other Hathornes who wanted to get away from Salem and the reputation they'd earned.
John Hathorne would eventually become involved with a create known as the Archangel Indriel (known today as The Smiling Man or Indrid Cold). He would give his three triplets over to it to serve as soldiers in God's army and purge with witch from the earth.
