Hathorne Industries
The industry that put New Pembroke on the map is Hathorne Disposables, manufacturer of disposable plastic cups of all sizes in crayon-bright colors. About 5 years ago, one of the Hathorne grandsons, Sedge Hathorne, failed to persuade his grandfather John Hathorne to repurpose the factory to create something that didn't destroy the environment. So he opened Hathorne Recycling about a mile down the road. It's not a moneymaker, not like the cup factory, but Sedge Hathorne believes that his contacts in China and Malaysia have the tech and expertise to turn thrown-out plastic into reusable materials.
Rumor has it New Pembroke isn't doing as well as Faith Ridge, fiscally, because their families have dirt on Sedge Hathorne.
Rumor also has it that the Hathornes are pushing really hard to get in control of real estate surrounding the lake. But who would want to own Horsethief Lake? It’s more like a swamp these days. Money makes people crazy.
Old Lady Hathorne has been deeply involved with Hathorne Industries for the better part of a century, but has recently taken a diminished background role, perhaps due to her advanced age.
John Hathorne is president and CEO and rules the company with an iron fist. Sedge Hathorne is the only one brave enough to oppose him. Young Katy Hathorne has taken very little interest in the company so far.
