Darren has lived in New Pembroke all his life, in the same 3-bedroom rental bungalow that his mom has managed to hold on to all these years. In elementary school he was pretty good at sports and had some friendships that way. As he got to the age where team sports have more structure he’s blown them off, but he still has loose connections to some of the more athletic kids, especially on the wrestling team.
Darren is reserved, determined, suspicious. Believes most people (including his family) are weak, morally and physically. Hungry for validation, but distrusts authority figures, and seeks it through physical achievement. Obsessed with martial arts, but no formal training.

He also has a friend named Eric, the son of a doctor. Eric is a nerd, and Darren looks down on him; but Darren hangs out with Eric because he has a video console with fighting games, and because he tolerates Darren picking on him.
On a recent field trip put together by Mr. Moss, Darren has recently had run ins with the gremlin or bat-like Sanguisuge creatures that live in Horse-Thief National Park and their seeming leader, The Big One.
