Louis Ferdinand
Crown Prince Louis Ferdinand
Prince Louis Ferdinand was the first Crown Prince until his death in 1803. He was the elder son of King Augustus I and Queen Elizabeth Louise, and the older brother of Augustus II. His death at the hands of Spanish and French colonial forces in the Louisiana Territory became a rallying cry for America's entrance into the War of the Third Coalition against Napoleon. It also caused the precedence of preceding Crown Princes being disallowed in being in field command in the military or lead an active combat role. The port of New Orleans was renamed to Ferdinand in his honor. His field sword, recovered after the battle, has been used as a tool for the Royal Oath of the succeeding American monarchs, beginning with his nephew, William.
