Olbern Organization in Kalin | World Anvil

Olbern

Olbern is small island city-state off the west coast of Kalin. Olbern is best known for its use of magic. Some of the finest mages and magic users come from Olbern, and the city is guarded by the Sentinels, magical guardians created by the Magi of Olbern.   The city allows visitors and traders, but there is no institutionalized education in the magical arts. Instead mages may come apply to live in Olbern, and long-standing families are expected to arrange for the training and education of their children.   Olbern is led by the Council of 8, with each Council Member representing each School of Magic. Every so often the Council elects an Arch-Mage, who leads the entire Council in an executive manner.

Demography and Population

Olbern is almost entirely magic users of one variety or another. New families or inhabitants are required to apply to live on Olbern, and must show magical aptitude. Those born in landed families not capable of magic are either exiled or join the manual work force of farmers and miners that keep Olbern running. Race wise Olbern does not discriminate. 40% Human, 27% Olark, 20% High Elf, 8% Pure Elf, 5% other.

Territories

Olbern is situated on a large island in the middle of a large bay on the western side of Kalin. The city of Olbern itself takes up much of the horizon. Only small ports and villages dot the landscape otherwise, and these are mostly filled with either privacy seeking citizens or the manual work force that keeps the island fed. It's known for its beauty and peaceful nature.

Military

Olbern is protected by The Sentinels, magically created autonomous guardians who enforce the laws of the land and protect its citizens. As Olbern has never been involved in a war there has never been a need for anything more than the Sentinels. Though with almost every person on the island being a practicing mage, the defense of the island would be rather simple.

Religion

Religion varies on Olbern, though the Church of the Mantle and The Paladin Order takes umbrage with Necromancy having a seat on the Council of 8.

Foreign Relations

Olbern keeps mostly to itself, and wealthy or powerful mages tend to use the island as a place of retirement or new home. This leads to most nations and Fallen Cities seeing the island as not much more as a commodity. Though it is well respected for its neutral attitude and willingness to trade.

Agriculture & Industry

Farms throughout the island and imports feed and supply any needs Olbern has. But magic provides most of what Olbern needs, whether it be manual labor or something more complicated.

Trade & Transport

Olbern's ports are open to traders looking to ply their wares, and Olbern citizens export scrolls, enchanted armor, and other magical curiosities.

Education

Olbern has no education system at all. Either a family finds private tutors to educate their children or they don't get educated at all. Though there are many public and private libraries in Olbern to learn from if one has the dedication to do so.

Infrastructure

Olbern's infrastructure is magically maintained by either local mages or the Sentinels depending on the nature of the infrastructure in question.
