The Rescue Ranger (Sil-vee-yah)

Professor/Doctor Sylvia Elizabeth Sunshard (a.k.a. Sylv)

"Another legend in Jeslore's history. Sylvia Sunshard, the princess that had to run away from her homeland as it fell into the hands of the empire, having suffered greatly at the empire and the slavery they practiced. When she escaped her homeland, having to leave everyone she held dear behind after having been subjected to the empire's depravity she not only brought it to the attention of Dracholm but bravely laid her own life on the line to fight against the empire. Additionally, she's considered the mother of modern medicine and one of the first outspoken advocates for civil rights."
— Hitchiker's guide to Jeslore

"It's almost scary the number of jobs she takes on: She's a scientist in the fields of ethology, biology, natural history, paleontology chemistry, and medicine, she still works in the loftwoods national park as a ranger where she frequently tickets ruffians, she still does fieldwork as a medic for the immortals, and she models electric motorcycles. Much to the dismay of her royal advisors who want her to prepare for one day ruling the sun elven kingdom."
— Broadway report on the occupations of the now revived immortals

Divine Domains

Sylvia is the guide of the compassionate, and is generally referred to as the healer. Her domain has a lot of overlap with that of Tower, but instead of shielding oneself from the grim reality of life, Sylvia's philosophy focuses on healing not just oneself but also others. Offering refuge and comfort to anyone in need of assistance, be it mental or physical. It's less prevention and more recovery. Part of her philosophy also focuses on the idea that to move forward from trauma, it can't be buried. No one can run from it, and to live with it one not only needs to face it but accept it as a part of themselves. Scars of the past shouldn't define a person, they should serve as reminders to stay focused on your goals. The guide of the compassionate, or the healer, is popular among younger people and people dealing with mental health. For more literal reasons, she's also popular among Jeslore's medical personnel.

Artifacts

It's a bit of a mystery where Life's Limit and the Sunshard went, but many believe that she gave them to her children as even in a world with guns and energy shields they could be useful.   Her other "artifacts" which are actually the equipment she used when she fell are on display in the apex 122 historical museum. Her armour, bow and pistol, like any other immortal artefacts, are held up to an immensely high value.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Sylvia is of short stature, making even some dwarves look tall. That said she's also in very good shape, particularly when it comes to her legs and her stamina which she needs for most of her occupations. Her most polished physical trait is stamina, a racial trait, but it comes at the cost of raw physical strength, which is not all that surprising when looking at her. Sylvia isn't very strong in her arms, most of her strength is in her legs, which is necessary as her work both on the field as a medic and in parks as a ranger requires her to run long distances and jump long gaps. Additionally, she weighs very little, which further adds on to her physical build. Her light weight reduces stamina consumption and requires less overall effort to make long jumps, it also reduces the force her grapple hooks need when reeling in, which further increases movement speed. Her movements have a lot less startup lag, this is again due to her weight as less force is needed to propel her body in a single direction or change direction. She can take sharper turns while moving at top speed, which subsequentially makes her a lot better at dodging melee strikes and gunfire alike.   Physically, Sylvia is optimized for speed and reflexes, like most sun elves are. In a somewhat ironic twist, blocking incoming attacks is impossible as she doesn't have the strength to keep her footing when taking a hit, but she can pull off a significantly harder deflect and redirect attacks away from her as that's a move that relies more on speed than strength. If Sylvia fights in melee combat, she will never directly strike an enemy but wear them out by constantly baiting out and dodging attacks. If she intends to hit her opponents, she needs to build up speed first to actually get some force behind her strikes. This generally means that the longer Sylvia remains in a duel, the more speed she can attain, which ups the force behind her attacks. Although Sylvia generally avoids melee combat, she'll generally try to create distance between herself and her target and then try to draw her bow or a pistol. Alternatively, she'll call in her animal companions to distract enemies for her to get in a cleaner shot or find a better angle to attack or disarm her target.   Another thing Sylvia does in battle is to make use of her grapple hooks as a way to control the movement of her opponent and build speed faster. In fact, something Sylvia is well known for doing is to land a grapple hook on her enemy and then reel herself into them to attack them at high speed either using her trusty machetes or her leg. She'll also use her grapple hook to latch onto the weapons of her enemies and disarm them if she can't risk entering melee combat.

Apparel & Accessories

Sylvia's fashion sense and choice of equipment change heavily depending on the era she finds herself in. Originally back on the sunset isles, she typically wore a minty green dress with intricate braids in her hair and loads of jewellery. She wasn't very disposed to carrying weaponry, and during training she wore an ordinary training tunic with standard issue weaponry. She still has that dress, or rather a rag left of it, that she ties to her belt later on. After her arrival to Dracholm she almost always had her ranger armour on and may have carried more weaponry than anyone else in the immortals:
  1. Goldwood ranger longbow
  2. Elven handgun
  3. Throwing knives
  4. dual hooked machetes
  5. Smoke bombs
  6. Hidden dagger
Being a healer, she also carried a lot of medical equipment, the majority of which was carried by her animals. In fact, her barbspine aside from being serving as her protector, also carried a lot of her medical equipment, rations, and ammunition. She generally carried 6 healing splash potions on her person and basic first aid equipment in satchels on her belt and leg, then had a ton of reserves in Barbsy's carrying bag. She'd generally carry enough supplies to help 9-12 people before needing to call in Barbsy to resupply.   After her return to Jeslore and subsequent adjustment to a more modern world, Sylvia wasn't seen in uniform quite as often. She generally wore denims with black boots, a T-shirt with graphics on them (usually the symbol that the goldwood rangers used) with a hoodie or a leather jacket. Even in civilian clothes, she often carried a pistol, but typically wore it on her lower back with her top covering it. When working as a ranger, she generally wore the same outfit other park rangers wore, which less looked like ranger armour and more resembled a police uniform with visible guns, pepper spray and handcuffs and black rubber gloves. Unlike peacekeeper armour though, which is different shades of blue, park ranger armour retains the traditional colour scheme rangers had of green and brown. Sylvia wore a brown shirt with a green jacket and a badge, with dark grey pants. Lastly, Sylvia was not uncommonly seen wearing a lab coat with a black turtleneck sweater, grey formal pants with black shoes and her ID around her neck. Even in her scientist attire, she carried a firearm, but her lab coat did offer inner pockets where she could discreetly holster it.   Then, finally, she had a new ranger outfit for missions on a more modern battlefield. It retained a lot of her original outfits features such as a semi long green cloak, black boots and green pants. But now she wore more armour, such as a ballistic vest and knee pads. On her arm, she still had a grapple hook device, except now it was now equipped with a monitor that displayed the location of injured soldiers who activated their distress beacon. She also now had a messenger bag, so she could store more medical equipment, rations and ammunitions with her so that she wouldn't need her barbspine as often for resupplying. Instead of tight green pants which helped her mobility, she now wore more baggy cargo pants, which had no real effect on her mobility while offering more storage for equipment. Instead of light corsair boots, she now wore full soldier boots, which actually improved her mobility in general, especially on rough terrain. Armour on her elbows also now allowed her to attack people using her elbows, which is particularly useful when she's being attacked from behind. Lastly, she no longer just threw bottles with healing agent in them at injured soldiers, she had now replaced them with a grenade of sorts that spread the healing agent over a much wider area. She had also improved the recipe to work better with smaller doses and in addition to healing injuries would also trigger an adrenaline rush to top off the stamina of allies. The healing grenades, in addition to being more effective, were also more compact which allowed Sylvia to carry more.   She also had new equipment:
  1. Military grade energy based laser bow. It fires solid energy projectiles that can be changed to different effects like explosive, flashbang, fire, knockback, and the default: piercing. It is also telescopic, allowing her to store it in her bag.
  2. 15 round 9 mm handgun. A standard issue handgun optimized for accuracy and low recoil but uses medium calibre ammo, which makes it less useful against armour enemies without perfect aim. It has a laser module as well as a silencer, allowing Sylvia to defend herself without drawing unneeded attention.
  3. Superheated throwing knives. Essentially modernized throwing knives that need about 5 seconds to reach lethal temperatures and keep that temperature for about 30 seconds, making them effective against armour.
  4. Dual guardblades (hookblade edition). Guardblades are essentially swords that leave a trail of energy barrier when swiped around. The shield it leaves behind makes deflecting (not reflecting) enemy fire much easier, even if it's automatic fire.
  5. Flashbangs. Sylvia uses flashbangs like she would use smoke bombs to cover her retreat. Except, she can also use flashbangs offensively to daze enemies to get an easy hit in.
Sylvia's equipment changes over time, but the one thing that remains consistent is that she uses a flute to give orders to her animals.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Every story has to start somewhere, and Sylvia's starts before the beginning. The Sunset Isles, a small, peaceful kingdom off the coast of Dracholm just out of their sphere of influence. A country so untouched by outsiders they did not have a standing army outside of their royal guard, which was trained by the expert fighting monk lineage who practiced combat as an art form. Sylvia was born as the only child of King Vaeril and Queen several years before the darkening of the isles. The Sunset Isles was ruled by a kingdom completely isolated from other nations and thus had no reason to use her as a political bargaining tool much like monarchies usually do and thus elected for her to the next heir to the throne. That doesn't mean she was free to choose who to marry though, as one of the fighting monks had a son that was immensely loyal to the king and essentially one of his knights. The job of the royal family was to protect the artefacts Illinea had bestowed upon them:   Sylvia grew up in the protection of 5 female members of the royal guard to ensure that she wouldn't fall in love with the people who protected her, which backfired horribly as Sylvia ended up discovering her own sexuality in the process. She particularly had a crush on the captain of the royal guard Azaria who was mostly oblivious to the nature of Sylvia's flirtatious comments. With the empire getting closer and the king not trusting their intentions, Sylvia was put in training by the monks and her groom to be with the captain of the royal guard as the overseer so that she would be ready to defend herself and the kingdom if their intentions were violent. He would not see his daughter finalize her training nor see her married, as disease took him and her mother went missing shortly after which allowed Vaeril's much less benevolent bastard brother Saevel to take the throne until Sylvia was old enough to be put in power.   The monk family had 4 members at the time: Rychel Gildas, who was the groom to be and was an expert at archery and the use of ranged weaponry. His accuracy was perhaps the most polished on Jeslore, with bows at least. Rhalyf Gildas, who for a sun elf was a muscular giant. Rhalyf wielded the flail like no one else in the realm and could hit the ground with such force it would send his opponents flying through the air, and that wasn't even as deadly as his own fists. Keya Gildas, the youngest who could generally be found loafing around their dojo, sleeping or scribbling in her diary. People thought she was lazy, little did they know that's exactly what she wanted. Keya was a master of stealth and deception. She always attacked from behind and could kill before her target knows they are in danger. Lastly, the person who directed the training was Lidy Gildas. Lidy was the eldest sister and sort of the de facto leader of the pack. Lidy Gildas is the record holder of the best warrior on Jeslorian history, with a staggering kill count of 300+ eliminations every deployment and 0 times getting injured. Only 2 people ever beat Lidy Gildas in a sparring match: Keya Gildas who copied her techniques and beat her at her own game and Sylvia who after years of training finally graduated.   Her training was brutal. The 4 monks with the royal guard as observers took her to a secluded area in the mountains, far away from Syiin Enne. It was here where the monks were trained by their parents, and it was here that Sylvia would learn their methods, and there wasn't much time left. Many times the royal guard wanted to intervene with the training, believing the monks were trying to kill her at several points but the training continued. For the final training, she had to take on all 4 of the monks in battle, and she had attempted this several times and failed for all of it. The years were intense but over the years something clicked with her, that the threat of death is enough to force a surrender. She learned that by aiming a bow at someone but not firing, she could give them the choice of surrendering or dying.   She challenged her mentors one last time and went straight for the youngest, pressuring her with machetes to prevent her from escaping and attacking her from behind, in the meantime she made sure that Keya stayed between herself and Rychel as he was not going to gamble his little sisters head even during a spar. She used her off-hand machete to redirect Lidy's spears away from her. She also knew that Rhalyf was slow and had to commit his fast movement options to lunge her way which would stun his allies. She baited Rychel and Lidy into coming closer while she relentlessly deflected Keya's attack, and when Rhalyf finally launched his flail's impact move she very swiftly jumped several meters back to avoid getting hit while leaving her opponents in range of Rhalyf's shockwave. While still dazed from the area strike of the eldest brother, Sylvia drew her bow and nocked 4 arrows ready to hit each one if they moved. When their daze was gone and they saw they had lost, they did not say a word and bowed.   It was a bittersweet ending, as she would now return to the city of Syiin Enne where either she would have to explain to her stepfather that she fell in love with the captain of the royal guard which would mean she had to break Rychel's heart whom she had gotten closer with even if just platonically, but she'd also have to out herself in front of everyone. She would once more have her choice made for her, however, as upon returning to the city she'd find that the empire had arrived and had already begun destroying the kingdom. Dusk elven settlers already greatly outnumbered the natives and it was clear the corrupt king Saevel had sold out the sun elves. By selling out his own kingdom he had secured the survival of himself and his daughter, and she was immediately taken away from her royal guard escort to be put in a tower to focus on things the empire considered fit for a princess.   Turns out that while she was out training, a lot had been changed around. Most notably, the sun elves were being enslaved by the empire as they had done to all those they had conquered and escape was no longer an option. Sylvia's groom was also changed, as to ensure loyalty the empire demanded that she was to marry a noble of the empire in 3 weeks even if she was still underage and he was in his 40s. She was essentially locked away in her tower and could rarely communicate with anyone the empire didn't approve. Yet she still managed to often sneak out and help the enslaved sun elves escape to greener pastures and do everything in her power to strangle the empire's influence on her kingdom. Unfortunately, she was found out and there was nothing the king could do to protect her as she had charges of high treason hanging over her head. Normally the Empire would burn her at the stake publicly but as would become clear soon the general stationed on the island had far more sinister plans in mind. She was cast in chains and locked in a dungeon, not to be seen for over 20 years.   The empire normally killed treasoners, but there was more at play here than simply politics. Centuries ago the dusk elven god Kragen fell in love with the sun elven goddess Illinea. He was the god of war and death and offered to bestow upon her everything his followers gave him, from blood sacrifices to the smallest offerings. Illinea was the goddess of light and life and saw in him only destruction, not just to her but to the entire realm, and thus declined. Enraged, Kragen riled his followers up against the sun elves. He promised that if Illinea's corrupted champion would be sacrificed to him after having beared spiders and agony under a red moon. This is why they did not kill Sylvia, as the Sunshard family had the blood of Illinea. She was Illinea's champion and was to be corrupted and then sacrificed. To be corrupted into a renegade elf (a corrupted version of another elven species that resembles a dusk elf) was no easy task, as one had to be physically and mentally broken beyond all repair and then put through several ghastly rituals.   Much to the dismay of the empire, however, Sylvia wouldn't break no matter what they did to her. And they did everything, nearly killing her a few times and falling to the most depraved forms of torture, she did not budge. For 20 years she would somehow manage to keep herself together. Every time they nearly got through to her, she got a second wind and the mental strength to resist not the mental damage but the corruption. It appeared her days were numbered though as the red moon was approaching and she would be sacrificed, corrupted or not. When her sacrificial date finally arrived she was brought to an arena of sorts that the empire had built for gladiatorial events, but it had been rebuilt for her sacrifice. She was chained to a large obelisk of sorts and dusk elven priests began summoning one of Kragen's effigies. Her final act of defiance was to spit it in the face and it oddly seemed to have killed it until she looked upwards and saw an arrow sticking in its head. It turns out Rychel had not forgotten about her.   As this was a sacrificial event that no one expected to be crashed, it took guards way too long to arm their ranged weaponry giving Rychel enough time to cut Sylvia loose and carry her to safety. Sylvia hadn't slept in over a week and was covered in injuries and scars If she wasn't carried, she likely couldn't have been able to move at all. With the help of smartly placed rebel fighters to slow down his pursuers, Rychel managed to get her to a safe house where the entirety of her royal guard instinctively began trying to patch her up. They put her back in what was left of her princess gown and prepped her for the next step because obviously she wasn't done quite yet. The plan was to bring her to a gryphon tower so that she could escape to Dracholm and seek help. But once in the gryphon tower, while everything was still being set up the empire had found them early.   Rychel had planned to escape with her so that they could come back for the royal guard with help, but he only had time to prepare one saddle. Without hesitation, he lifted Sylvia onto it who was adamant about not leaving anyone behind, least of all him. But there was no time to argue, as imperial legionnaires stormed up the stairs. By the time Rychel realized he had a spear sticking through his chest, Sylvia was already reaching the horizon. Looking back from atop the gryphon, Sylvia would see that she was lucky to avoid corruption. Lidy Gildas, the greatest warrior of Jeslore and her mentor had just killed her own brother. From a rebel against the empire to a corrupted puppet in less than 3 weeks, it was hard for Sylvia to believe her own eyes and see that the fate of her kingdom really did rest in her hands now.   Gryphons are fast, but she was not the only one with access to them. Additionally, hers was injured as shortly after taking off it was hit with a crossbow bolt. After flying for close to 3 days, she finally reached Dracholm, which had just come out of a war of its own. She crashed in the dwarven land of Bylyn and got stuck under her own gryphon. She had no time to rest yet, as she could already see her pursuers on the horizon, so she struggled to get out from under her now fallen mount to find some civilization. After running for about 10 minutes she could see some stumpy figures wearing helmets in the distance before feeling a sharp pain in her leg and falling to the ground. The soldiers who followed her had finally caught up to her and after everything she went through it looked as if it was all in vain. Once again, in the face of certain death, she remained defiant and threw dirt at her would-be captors, but then a loud blast rang out and the soldier standing closest to her fell lifelessly to the ground. Before the other soldier could even draw his sword and locate the one responsible he too was shot down. The last thing Sylvia could hear before finally passing out from exhaustion was: "Put the poor thing in the buggy, me office is near we can treat her there.", "Yes sir, mister Rosefield!"   She woke up 2 days later in a warm room that somewhat resembled a charting office. Despite expectations, she was not dehydrated or even undernourished and had been patched up with unfamiliar medical equipment. She stumbled her way out of the bed and immediately fell to the floor. She caught her breath and forced herself onto her legs to investigate the strange place she woke up in. Her first objective was to investigate the humming coming from the room next to her. She stumbled through the hallway in a daze and opened the door to find the dwarf that ordered her rescue wearing a pink cooking apron with text in a foreign language. The room appeared to be a kitchen of sorts, with food on the fire. The dwarf looked around with a smile at first until he realized Sylvia was on the verge of passing out again, he instantly changed his demeanor and rushed to help her. He explained that she needed more rest and that he'd come with some food in due time.   Time passed and she recovered. She eventually left the dwarf behind in search of an authority figure. Naturally, being an elf, she took Klaut's advice and went for the loftwoods which had another race of elves. Unfortunately, their elder would not speak to a foreigner unless they could prove they do more than take from them and actually assist. With no time to waste, Sylvia immediately signed up with the goldwood rangers so that she could get started, but unfortunately, it would be a long time until the locals came to actually trust her. She did finally catch a much-needed lucky break when she met a man in armor with a man in red armor next to him and an injured woman on his shoulder. He asked Sylvia if she could help him with a candidate for his crew titled the immortals, which was looking for one member, preferably a medic.   Sylvia obliged and by using what she learned while locked up in her tower and reading she expertly patched up the immortals' fallen recruit. The man in armor invited her to their usual meeting bar, saying that Klaut had told him about her and that as far as they're both concerned she made the cut. There were some other candidates she had to compete with such as a friend of Blaze who was an ace with revolvers and Tower's apprentice at the time who was fast and nimble. Sylvia herself was faster than Tower's apprentice and much more skilled in unarmed combat, and while she was decent with the revolver, she was nowhere near the gunslinger Jessie was. She did have one major advantage over both of them, and that is that Sylvia was a medic, and outside of Spectre who knew a little bit of restoration magic and Klaut who only really knew first aid, the immortals needed a dedicated medic at the time. At the bar meeting Tower let her know that he talked to the other two candidates and that she was now officially considered a member, despite the fact Tower has only seen her patch up Jessie earlier that day and the only other reference he had of her was hearing from Klaut that she remained defiant even on the brink of death.   Sylvia had no idea who the immortals even were and mainly agreed to joining them because she didn't think she was in a position to turn down helping the people of Dracholm at the time, but she must have noticed that after joining them her social status skyrocketed. She went from a ranger recruit to lance lieutenant in just a month, which would take anyone else decades. This wasn't just because of her new found social status though, she also proved to be a brilliant ranger. She held the record of top speed reached with grappling hooks at the time, was one of the few rangers to tame a barbspine, and with her training ranked above everyone else in the corps in efficiency alone. Perhaps more importantly was that she had international appeal; most rangers in the corps were content killing criminals and cleaning it up, but despite carrying lethal weaponry Sylvia exclusively made arrests rather than eliminations. She quickly came to be seen as the ideal ranger: mobile, effective, and compassionate. Lastly, she functioned perfectly as a rescue unit, using the sunshard and things she had learned about alchemy to brew healing potions. Potions that could heal near mortal injuries by simply making contact. The recipe obviously wasn't flawless from the start, but over time she improved it and with it her reputation for being able to heal almost anyone.   During her time in the immortals she also grew closer to the others and learned to trust strangers once again. She was particularly fond of Klaut, Tower, and Viktor. She also got close to Jessie Red, whom she nearly ended up marrying if it weren't for the fatal expedition she was deployed on. With so much going on, Sylvia nearly forgot what she came to Dracholm for in the first place, as the situation in the Sunset Isles had only gotten worse and the empire had begun eyeing up the Dracholmian mainland, having already invaded Chey'non. With her newfound fame Sylvia had sent multiple letters explaining the situation to the wood elven elder, but still due to her status as a foreigner they had no intention of reading her correspondence. In a last ditch effort to bring the situation in her homeland to the attention of the ruling class of Dracholm, she wrote a letter detailing the atrocities she herself had to endure and asked Tower if he could deliver it to the king of Linnesse about 2 days before they were deployed.   The wood elven elder at the time was extremely prejudice and not at all willing to give a foreigner her time of the day even if Sylvia had done so much for her people and now commanded the adoration of the wood elven public. Unlike Sylvia and the wood elven elder though, the relation between Tower Charlot and King Albert Dragonblood couldn't be more different. The king had requested Tower to marry his daughter, who refused because he was already married at the time and their relationship was more comparable to a close friendship rather than an employment. In fact, Tower would often refer to the king by just his name rather than title and crack jokes in his presence which greatly upset his advisors. So when Tower delivered him a letter that he said was important the king had every intention of reading it, he could only never have predicted that the contents of said letter would keep him awake at night. Unfortunately, by the time the King could present the letter to other representatives in the Dracholmian Union, Sylvia had already fallen during the mission. She had been hit by the spell of a wizard and was presumed dead.   While the other members of the Dracholmian Union were appalled by the actions of the empire, they wanted to wait until the immortals returned from their missions. They would find to their dismay that only one would return: Blaze who later committed ritual suicide as he believed his survival brought dishonour on his country, but in his actual suicide note he stated that he could not live with the memories of his closest friends dying one by one. With the immortals gone, and during the chaos of countries scrambling to find new warriors to take their place the king of Linnesse could convince other members of the union that out of gratitude for the actions of the immortals and in their memory, they would denounce the actions of the empire and declare war.   They publicly denounced the actions of the empire in great detail, winning the support of other super powers like the republic of ancient races, the drosden fleet, and to the surprise of many also the iron union who may have had their own agenda to fight against the empire. Following the denouncing of the empire, the federation was founded which had the the dracholmian union as the leading voice and the odds were already stacked entirely against them due to the empire having much greater numbers and not even lagging that far behind them. Yet, the federation pressed on with the war which in honor of Sylvia was named Operation Sunrise.   While the war raged on, Sylvia was not actually dead but had been displaced to Eotrask, something they wouldn't figure out until several thousand years later. Sylvia spent a long time in Eotrask trying to return to Drasica where she was from, but found that the people of the land she found herself in also needed her help which lead to the events of Mercy Road. When it was finally discovered that she was alive and when she was subsequently located the empire had already been defeated and multiple wars had been fought and roughly 3000 years had passed. Like the other immortals who had to be revived, Sylvia had to adjust to a whole new world of advanced technology as Eotrask didn't have an interest in technology like Drasica did. Sylvia was also retroactively awarded several Ph.Ds based on the fact that her old diaries still served as probably scientific theories in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Ethology, Natural History, and Medicine and unlike her royal title, she was actually proud of these.   She didn't just take the doctorates and lived off them however, she also signed back up to a university to major in paleontology and brush off her knowledge on the fields she had been given doctorates, as to update her knowledge to a more modern era. At this point in her life it was clear Sylvia was the immortal that leaned most into being a scientist, even Klaut who was more of a business man. Despite still doing field work as a medic for the immortals andworking as a ranger in a natural park, she primarily worked as a scientist for one of the companies Klaut owned. Even with her royal advisors begging her to return to the throne, her interest and commitment was oriented to science, not ruling a kingdom. Being part of the immortals, she was also often enlisted in the Dracholmian war on terrorism where she was sent after what was left of the chimera crew (the imperial version of the immortals) where she famously fought her old mentor Lidy. It was a climactic battle but Sylvia defeated her without killing her and had her arrested.   Many agree that Sylvia's personal story ended when she finally defeated her master and brought relative peace to Dracholm. Of course it's not an end to the stories of Dracholm or even her involvement in them as the empire would later rise again, she would eventually give in to the pressures of her kingdom by returning on the throne and having children (which lead to one of the most controversial moments of her life.), and much later the exploits of the neo immortals, who had to take the place of the originals. But that is not Sylvia's personal story. Sylvia had come from being figurative prisoner of the expectations of others while being a princess to being a literal prisoner of an evil empire to finally escaping all of it and being who she wanted to be. She defied what people told her was her destiny and by carving out her own path not only wrote history but became a symbol of freedom, compassion and determination.

Sexuality

Sylvia never had a real interest in men other than friendship, and even that is rare, as she typically doesn't respond well to male contact as a result of what she had been through. It takes a very long time for her to trust a man, with some exceptions being Tower and Klaut who either saved her life or looked after her while clearly not being sexually motivated. She's also more likely to trust a man if someone she is close to can vouch for them, for example: Blaze Crimson. Blaze did often make mild flirtatious remarks on her appearance but as he was committed to Katja Kheylana at the time (who would neuter him if he tried anything) and as Tower ensured her it was banter she accepted it and consequentially accepted Blaze as a close friend and in some instances even returned the remarks.    Trauma has very little to do with her sexuality, as she had a crush on the captain of the royal guard assigned to protect her, ironic as they were explicitly all female, so it wouldn't interfere with her pre-planned wedding with Rychel. Rychel is likely the closest Sylvia ever got to being romantically interested in a man, but she also wrote in her diary that she saw that Rychel was a good person, and she didn't want to break his heart despite not being interested. It also may have helped that Rychel and male sun elves in general are fairly androgynous looking. The only thing her PTSD has an effect on is how long it takes for her to trust a man and accept him as a friend.    She's just as disinterested in having kids, which her trauma may have played a role in. This is mostly because Sylvia is so committed to the ways of science and a child requires attention, which she fears she's not able to give as she already has animals under her care, and she does not want to choose between the two. Additionally, she keeps hearing from others in her social circle such as Tower's wife that giving birth hurts a lot and finds that to be enough of a reason to want to avoid it. Of course, she did eventually have kids and the process of her doing so may have been her most controversial moment and was primarily influenced by Tower and Blaze's sense of humour. A sense of humour that she generally shares.

Education

Sylvia was born in a time when education was not really considered important for the average person, much less for a woman. So most of what she learned, she did on her own by observing others and reading a lot. Of course, she learned to read and write as that would have been necessary for passing laws and reading correspondence, but she used this mostly to make notes and later to write down theories on animals she encountered. She was into science fairly early on in her life, before arriving in Dracholm but as a princess she simply wasn't in a position she could really commit to it. She likely never would have predicted, though, that her notes would be so crucial to later scientists in establishing a lot of the foundation for many scientific fields. So when she returned to Dracholm years later she was awarded several doctorates simply because her old theories were so essential to shaping the modern understanding of multiple fields. For example, it was because of her observations in animal behaviour that ethology even became a scientific field in the first place. Her curiosity helped spark interest for things that not a lot of people cared about at the time.   Of course, Sylvia didn't just take the doctorates and do nothing with them. In fact, the first thing she did was go back to school so that she could update her knowledge on the subjects and to prove to herself that she actually earned them. She also took an extra study in palaeontology, which she had taken an interest in shortly after hearing about it. Sun elves are not racially predisposed to be highly intelligent (a trait found in dwarves, goblins, and desert elves), generally being of average intelligence with some outliers. So it's a bit of a mystery how Sylvia managed to take all these courses and complete them so fast, but people generally agree it's because she's enthusiastic about it. Unlike a lot of other older races who are content with an archaic way of life, Sylvia is progressive and curious. Sylvia is not an idle person, she loves being busy either with learning new things or at work, especially if she gets to work with animals, and she has an insatiable desire to know how things work.

Employment

Over the years (the ones in Drasica anyway) Sylvia has worked in a wide variety of sectors.   Goldwood Ranger Her first job was as a goldwood ranger in the Loftwoods. Goldwood rangers are essentially forest wardens, rescue units, special forces, and beat cops rolled into one profession. They are also the unit making up most of the Loftwoods' armed forces, despite being highly specialized. Goldwood rangers are renowned for their mobility, being the first unit to make use of grapplehooks to reach impressive speeds. In fact, until more modern vehicles were invented, goldwood grapples were the fastest mode of transportation available in Jeslore.   They're also the first unit of Jeslore to explicitly lean more into law enforcement rather than being military reserves, which is why today they are considered a law enforcement agency rather than a military unit. Their most important task is managing the massive forest that makes up over 99% of the loftwoods, mainly by arresting poachers, investigating pollution, putting down sick animals, and keeping track of the general animal population. They also verify hunting licenses, capture bandits, maintain order within city limits, and oversee logging operations.   The goldwood rangers also have responsibilities outside protecting the forest though. As a rescue unit, they often locate lost travelers and return them to the road or provide medical assistance if necessary. And during times of war, they also act as the Dracholmian Expeditionary Force's recon unit. In more modern times, they generally do much of the same but now also concern themselves with modern laws regarding things such as traffic, drugs, and human trafficking. Most of them still use grapple hooks, but there are also ones that use motorcycles.   Goldwood ranger is the occupation Sylvia associates herself most with, as she's typically seen wearing her uniform when doing work for the immortals or traveling even when not on active duty. After proving herself and joining the immortals, she quickly climbed to the rank of Lance Lieutenant. In the goldwood rangers, Lance Lieutenant is essentially the equivalent of the national champion/hero. The rank is indicated by 2 green stripes of war paint on the cheeks (as the wood elves don't use medals) and this too she is often seen wearing despite not being on active duty (although this is because she puts it on before work and showers when getting home after work, which tends to be late in the evening).   Sylvia had her work cut out for her trying to prove that she had what it take not only to join up but also to become what is essentially the best the loftwoods had to offer. For one, she was a foreigner and thus wasn't allowed to meet with the wood elven elder. Yet, she was capable of things that no one else in the goldwoods was. For example, she could stomach Tower's sense of humor, she had trained a Barbspine which was thought to be impossible, she was an excellent hand-to-hand combatant and could hit her shots both with the bow and a handgun, and perhaps above all she was a brilliant medic.   A medic was exactly what the immortals needed for the time, and with her varied assortment of skills, sense of humor, and widespread reputation she was approached by Tower to join the immortals before the goldwood rangers even promoted her to corporal. She would be allowed to keep working for the goldwood rangers as long as she was willing to join the immortals on their missions, and she'd get to work alongside one of the few people willing to befriend her in a time where any foreigner was looked at with distrust.   Medic Upon her return and subsequent re-recruitment as the goldwood rangers' lance lieutenant, Sylvia took a similar contract she had with the immortals but with the peacemakers as a medic. She was already well known to be the medic in the immortals and she was more than willing to offer her expert medical services to Jeslore's armed forces. In the more modern times though, she wouldn't be seen wearing her lovers division armor when not on active duty (mostly because when she's not on-mission she's typically doing work for the goldwood rangers as a warden) partially because it is breaking protocol to wear uniform when at home.   Model Unsurprisingly with her appearance and popularity she was approached for a wide variety of sleazy modelling gigs but never accepted one of them until one of the biggest motorcycle manufacturers, Bergmann Engines contacted her. Sylvia owned a Bergmann Engines motorcycle and often used it for work, and as this was a fusion generator based vehicle which was new technology better for the environment Sylvia couldn't help but accept the job, leading to this ad campaign where she is depicted alongside the vehicle in question. She would continue to work with Bergmann Engines as a model assuming it was tasteful and the vehicles didn't cause needless pollution.   Scientist In her off time, Sylvia has written and published a large number of books, all of which revolved around her scientific work done. After the immortals disbanded and she finally agreed to take the sun elven throne, she still primarily did science work and was pretty infamous for converting about 4/5 of the royal palace into a laboratory and spending more time in there than in the throne room. Sylvia is often underestimated in terms of her intelligence due to her royal background, but she's an expert in the field of ethology, natural history, biology, chemistry, medicine, and paleontology.   Most of her early works like her books mainly regarded paleontology, natural history, and ethology, mainly researching new advances in the fields while correcting some of the misunderstandings she has caused, particularly on the genus Spinotherium Imperatus where she corrects some misunderstandings and covers the long beaten history of reclassification and debate. She also has several books that cover animal behavior and paleontology, mainly where she speculates on what Jeslores most recently discovered extinct animals may have looked like.   Most of her work in her laboratory is more oriented towards curing diseases and developing non-addictive performance enhancers as alternatives for the current painkillers in use by the army.   Queen Sylvia spent most of her life as a princess, often outright forgetting that she's of royal descent as it's a system of governance she does not particularly care about. By the time she was finally approached by her royal advisors in regards to the rebuilding completed, and her being officially promoted to queen she outright refused to rule. It took serious convincing for her to even come back, and even after taking the throne, she spent much more time in her laboratory than in the throne room. In fact, she would often threaten to suspend the monarchy and implement a democratic model whenever she was reminded of her royal duties.   Eventually, she did go through with one of her threats, and while not completely suspending the monarchy she did strip the sun elven monarchy of all its power and effectively reduced it to a democratic monarchy, where her only job was to inaugurate newly elected officials. This way, she could fully throw herself into her scientific endeavors.

Accomplishments & Achievements

  1. Discovered and named the Red Spiked Barbspine (Spinotherium Imperatos).
  2. Invented one of the most powerful healing agents at the time and later improved it to once more be fit for military use.
  3. Record holder for grapple hook speed.
  4. First sun elf to be awarded 4+ Ph.Ds.
  5. Sparked public interest in many scientific fields, including: Ethology, Natural History, and Chemistry.
  6. Became a prophet in a secular religion.
  7. Invented the scale of dhipper, named it after a fellow ranger that she had befriended.
  8. Is often listed as the reason Barbspines are such a culturally significant animal.
  9. Defeated and arrested the best warrior of Jeslore.
  10. Dismantled the sun elven monarchy from the position of a monarch.
  11. Saved the lives of over 12K+ soldiers on the field.
  12. Generally an icon of compassion in Jeslorian media.
  13. Popularized the use of non-lethal force.
  14. Discovered several terrestrial animals.
  15. Cited as the inspiration for article 4, section 7 in the 3rd decree of the Kitzbach Accord which dictates that medical personnel must deliver aid to injured individuals, no matter what side they are on. This is because Sylvia was well known for patching up enemy survivors.
  16. Revolutionized healthcare around Jeslore.
  17. Mothered 2 children, both of which would join the neo immortals.
  18. Because of Sylvia, the world found out about the crimes of the empire before they were strong enough to attack Dracholm. If it wasn't for her, they may well have had a greater advantage.

Failures & Embarrassments

  1. Sylvia often blames herself for taking so long to get to the leaders of Dracholm.
  2. Because she originally called the barbspine the terror bear, it caused a great deal of conclusion and debate when it became more clear that barbspines are not actually related to bears.
  3. Sylvia over 3000 years has had roughly 6 lovers and never broke up once. They either died of old age or on the field because she couldn't protect them. Particularly Vilorah, who died of cancer that she could have cured if she just had the Sunshard.
  4. She blames herself for Lidy's corruption.
  5. Sylvia is a rescue ranger, which is a combat medical unit. Sylvia always went for the non-lethal approach of injuring her enemies, but it didn't always pan out her way. Either because her targets bleed out or because she misses her mark and hits the head.

Mental Trauma

While Sylvia did witness the horrors of war with her own eyes and was affected, almost all of her trauma stems from the 20 years she was held captive. The objective of her captors was to break her mentally so that she could be prepared for corruption, and they tried everything they could think of. When she was first rescued, she found it hard to even speak and the damage they inflicted on her, while not breaking her, was permanent. It didn't help that when she was captured she was still a child and the torturers did not hold back just because she was younger. She tries to internalize her trauma, but among many other things she gets panic attacks when spotting orcs, and she responds negatively, sometimes violently, when men make physical contact.   Her trauma is also partially one of her motivators, as she wants to prevent it from ever happening to anyone. It motivated her to not hide from the empire but to fight it. It's also the reason she's generally averse to violence, mostly again because of things she has witnessed, and now always tries to find a more peaceful option when dealing with problems. Her extremely friendly nature also stems from her trauma because while she's still assertive and makes her boundaries clear, she's not very aggressive about it until her trauma is triggered. She wants to be as soft and caring as possible, mostly as her way of reducing the world's negativity. In fact, most of her actions come from how much she suffered and consequentially her commitment to reducing the amount of suffering in the world. By committing to science she helps invents things that generally make life easier for the people of Jeslore, by being a healer she saves lives instead of ending them, and so on.   Her unwillingness to return home is the last example of a result of being held captive and tortured for over 20 years. Even though she has good memories of her homeland, especially from before the empire arrived. Sylvia does not want to go home, she generally enjoys her new life in Dracholm a lot more as it doesn't trigger bad memories that send her into a near suicidal depression and no one has any expectations of her other than to just be herself. She'd rather live in her dilapidated treehouse in the Loftwoods than live in a palace at home.

Intellectual Characteristics

Sylvia is exceptionally intelligent for a race that's generally above average intelligence. Sun elves are typically averse to technology and stick to tradition, whereas Sylvia embraces modernity and heralds science. Her intelligence mostly comes from the fact she's a very quick learner, combined with the fact she has an insatiable desire to learn the inner workings of life. Her interest in science is not something that randomly appeared after a spiritual awakening, it was always there, but she couldn't really commit to it. In Dracholm, she could, and her dedication to science really shows, especially after her return to Dracholm in the more modern era. In this era, she's generally seen wearing either regular clothes or a lab coat, and her face paint is a much rarer sight.   Even after finally giving in to the pressure her advisors applied and moving back to the sunset isles, she was still more committed to science than royal succession. She converted about 4/5 of her palace into a laboratory and only left the throne room untouched as it held cultural significance. She herself as the princess and later queen would more often than not sleep at her desk, much to the dismay of her advisors. Back in Jeslore, her day job was still a park ranger and her being a scientist was something she'd occupy herself with in her off time. But now, as a queen she was too far from the national park she worked at to do her job, so she fully committed to science. In fact, when her advisors pressed her about her royal duties, she ordered the abolition of the monarchy and the implementation of a democratic system.   Sylvia seems driven by her hunger for knowledge, limited in an ethical way. She often cites science as one of the most important institutions in existence and responds very negatively when something gets in the way of progress, such as her royal duties. She wants to do good in the world, and after having beaten so many enemies on the field, her greatest foe is uncured diseases and archaic technology.

Morality & Philosophy

Sylvia's philosophy is primarily one of compassion. Sylvia is a person that possibly suffered more than anyone else in Jeslore, and she not only chose to not let it destroy her as that was exactly what the empire was after, but she would also not let it weaken her. She chose to become a beacon for people who suffered like her, no matter how little, and offer refuge to those that need it. In a sense, she is still driven by the damage dealt to her as she accepts that she can look at it the way she wants, it happened, and it will always be a part of her. So instead of letting it destroy her as a person, she uses it as a reminder of what she may be responsible for if she embraces the ways of blatant violence and vengeance. Sylvia's philosophy revolved around the reduction of violence and negativity in general, she herself always tries to use non-lethal force and will always patch up the injured, be they friend or foe.   Whenever she does kill, it's always in defence of herself and her friends, and even then she tries to spare her target without risking others. She believes the use of violence doesn't automatically make a person bad, but that doesn't mean that it should be the first option thought of. She's a medic because, as she says: "It's not up to me to decide on a life, I'm just here to make sure everyone has their chance.". Furthermore, she detests violence unless it's a last resort option, and even then it should be used sparingly and responsibly. More importantly, she believes that as living beings, it is our duty to help those in need in whatever way possible. In her eyes, a better world is possible, but it will be an immense struggle but one worth it.   Freedom, health, and life are intrinsic rights and must be defended at all costs. Like Tower, Sylvia's philosophy is one of self-sacrifice, although her philosophy is a lot more literal and based around comforting others rather than shielding them. She's both literally and figuratively a healer, patching up wounds but also helping others recover from trauma in whatever way she can. Because not everyone is as strong as the other, and delivering help and healing to the people that need it is an essential part of life. In her more philosophical books she describes life not as a conquest but a journey, one with no clear end where the goal is to make the world around oneself better. By helping others, people are much more likely to help you which will be repaid one day, or not. Do not count on being repaid, but count on your own actions and more importantly your ability to help others in need.   Her philosophy is also one of sensitivity, that emotions are to be expressed rather than locked away. To help others, one must help themselves too as bottling emotions and pain makes them a lot more cynical and to truly heal, one needs to come to terms with whatever caused the scar rather than lock it away and forget about it. Scars, especially of the mental kind, can serve as a most powerful motivator to be a better person. Sylvia can defeat imperial soldiers all day, but the toughest battle she fought was against the damage inflicted on her. Facing her demons instead of running away from them and accepting that no matter what, the damage dealt to her will always be part of her. When you come to terms with your deepest scars, accept them as part of you, only then can you truly begin to heal. After that the choice remains, will it define you as a person, or motivate you? The answer should be clear.

Taboos

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, in spite of her general philosophy of kindness, Sylvia is still a fairly controversial figure. A lot of which has to do with how she unapologetically owned her sexuality in a time when same-sex relations were heavily frowned upon. Especially early on, she was openly disinterested in men and would reject their advances even if they were of much higher status than herself, which was unheard of in almost every Jeslorian country at the time. But as time went on, and she made more of a name for herself, it became clear that her defying the expectations of a conservative elite would only scratch the surface of a lot of her controversy, although it would be related to some of it.   If anything, the main contributors to her controversial history were Tower, Blaze and their sense of humour. She considered Tower and Blaze to be her best friends, and they had a strong influence on more than just her sense of humour (for example, Sylvia speaks with a strong old Linnessian accent when it should be sun elven. Old Linnessian sounds very similar to British when her own language is similar to French.) and her adoption of their sense of humour alongside some of their philosophy regarding no limits humour often lead to her making insensitive jokes or rude remarks. Most of her rudeness is directed to her royal advisors, who she sees as trying to interfere with her research. While on her own she tends to be more serious, if she's accompanied by her friends she is generally just as much of a clown.   Her most controversial moment of her life was when she finally gave in to the royal advisors' demands of her having children. She agreed to have children if it would be done through a donor, as she still had no intention of sleeping with a man. To further appease the religious population of the sunset isles, she chose the donor to be one of the last vanguard servants alive in Jeslore: the freelancer. Vanguard servants are essentially angelic helpers of the vanguard, and by having the blood of another vanguard she could satisfy the more religious voices in her country. Of course, she didn't do this with finesse. In fact, she just walked up to the freelancer with an empty soda bottle and asked him to cum in it, an idea she unsurprisingly got from Tower. Especially considering she did so during a social event. It doesn't end there either, while making arrangements for the procedure, she kept the bottle in a fridge in her laboratory where one of her co-workers assumed it was milk and drank it. The whole ordeal lead to quite possibly the most ridiculous headlines in Jeslorian history.

Personality Characteristics

Virtues & Personality perks

First and foremost, Sylvia is a brilliant scientist and applies her knowledge to her professions with great finesse. To give examples: Her expertise in ethology and biology are well served in her work as a park ranger. Biology combined with medical expertise make for an unmatched field medic track record, and her experience as a chemist as well as a biologist just make her a great doctor in general. She's all around just well versed in the ways of science, capable of getting into any field she takes an interest in. Originally in the immortals, Klaut was the genius of the crew, masterminding most of their equipment. It has been long since Sylvia overtook Klaut as the genius of the immortals, especially when overtime he became more of a businessman than a scientist.   Sylvia's second most polished trait is her agility. Speed is her only defensive trait, allowing her to dodge attacks and run away from enemies she can't defeat on her own, or at least hold out until help arrives. Her speed it also her only way of damaging enemies when she's out of ammo, as her damage scales with how fast she is moving. It also obviously allows her to more effectively track targets both on foot and when flying around with her grapple hooks. Her accuracy also lends itself well to her fast-paced movement tactic. Sylvia needs barely any time at all to acquire a target and bank a shot, even if they're far away, with either her bow or her pistol. Sylvia generally likes to keep firearms for armoured targets, as a bullet has better piercing capabilities than an arrow. She'll also often hit armoured enemies in little gaps between plate armour if she's out of bullets.   Sylvia is also highly compassionate, which helps people and animals trust her. Her tendency to heal people regardless of whether they're on her side or not has caused all but the most zealous imperial troopers to defect. Her friendly nature means that confrontations are more likely to end her way, and she can often end a confrontation without having to pull the trigger.   Another strength Sylvia has is that she's perceptive, which is a skill that lends itself well to all her jobs but particularly her job as a medic as she's able to spot injured soldiers more easily. It also helps keep her from being sneaked up on, as she's normally in tune to her surroundings. Additionally, she has very quick reflexes and can respond to attacks very quickly by either moving out of the way or deflecting.

Vices & Personality flaws

Sylvia sacrifices a lot of her strength and resilience for her abilities. She may be fast and hard to hit but can't handle taking much damage. If she can not evade a hit, she's very likely getting knocked out if not seriously injured, so while she has the most extreme abilities she's also the one of the immortals relying most on her friends to cover her. When she's not on duty, she can work around this by relying more on her animals or just not doing work that requires confrontation. This also applies to physical strength, while she's an excellent archer she can't actually keep her bow drawn for long as it would be too demanding, so she needs to make her shot in under 15 seconds before she runs out of stamina in her arms.   Further on her lack of resilience, Sylvia is very vulnerable to temperature. She becomes slower when she's too hot or too cold, which leaves her open to attack. And while she can just remove clothes when it's too hot and carry on, if she has to protect herself against the cold by putting on extra layers of clothes she becomes far less evasive.

Hygiene

Sylvia practices excellent hygiene, even before modern utilities like showers were invented. Back then she typically used a lake and used her animals to keep gawkers away. Being hygienic helped with her job as a ranger, as wild animals can pick up on smell from miles away.

Religious Views

Sylvia grew up being fairly religious, almost zealous even and while she never stopped believing in her goddess Illinea, her dedication took a backseat to her dedication to science. As Illinea was a vanguard, her existence didn't necessarily contradict science, but she just found the unravelling of the mysteries of science to be just as important as her dedication to her goddess whom she was told was killed anyway.

Mannerisms

The influence Tower has on her is very clear, especially when she's not doing anything important. She very much enjoys pretending to be brain-dead in an attempt to be funny but doesn't really make it as central to her personality. Unlike with Tower though, even though Sylvia can be painfully unfunny and likes to pretend to be stupid, it's a lot harder to pull her intelligence into question due to her accolades and that she's far more likely to break character. In fact she only really does it when Tower and/or Blaze are around (which is more often than not considering they're close) and otherwise has an extremely kind demeanour, always speaking in a soft tone and generally trying to make people comfortable with her.   Unless Sylvia is comfortable around the person, she's usually always occupied when talking to people. Either she is busy with research or doing chores around her home. Sylvia is very antsy and not one for idle hands.

Speech

Sylvia always has a somewhat cheerful yet soft tone to her voice whenever she's not trying to comfort someone. She seems to mimmick Tower's speech pattern as well, often slurring her speech more near the end of a sentence especially when she's trying to be funny but speaking with a lot more clarity when she's serious.

Sylvia is essentially the first dedicated scientist of Jeslore while also being something of a parody on the average female elven character that uses magic and archery but is next to useless in close range. Sylvia on the other hand isn't dangerous in close combat, but she is very hard to actually land hits on. Additionally, unlike elves normally she does not use magic, instead using alchemical potions, archery and primitive guns that helped spark an interest for the ways of science in the future.

Thanks! Took me around 2 days to finish the thing and clear it of more obvious typos.
