House Calleron

House Calleron is the current ruling family of Whirlan. They have ruled for nine hundred years.
Welcome to the Callerons, wife. We've ruled this country for centuries.
— King Rendorik to Queen Lavinia on their wedding day

Structure

The Calleron family, like all Gifted Houses, is led by a specific family leader who makes the decisions for their house. The family leader is also the king or queen of Whirlan and their heir is the Crown Prince or Princess. Other family members in the royal line include the king or queen's spouse, the ruler's siblings and cousins, and anyone sworn to their family. The most recent leader was King Rendorik, who was assassinated ten years ago by the Dalirn. When he was ruler, his only relatives were cousins and his sister Cassandra, who married into House Issachar.   Distant relatives, although technically members of House Calleron, do not have the same legal sway as the immediate ruling family. They also have no claim on the throne. Servants and guards sworn to the king and queen are considered members of the house, but not in the same way. They are seen as loyal members of the house as an organization, but not as a family. Those who marry into the house become full members of both the family and the organization.

Assets

As the ruler of Whirlan, House Calleron is backed by the royal treasury and all of the country's resources. The king or queen always has the might of Whirlan's army and will often allow family members to command portions of the army.

History

House Calleron has existed since shortly after the founding of Whirlan. The Callerons were close friends of House Nistern, the former ruling house of Whirlan, and took over the country after illness wiped out

the rulers and left only Princess Amelia, the youngest. Originally, the Callerons planned to rule only until Amelia came of age, but after Amelia died when she was twenty-two, her husband Orion Calleron took the throne and instated House Calleron as the ruler.   The Callerons ruled Whirlan well. Although their relations with neighboring countries Crystland and Tierhal could rarely be called civil and often descended into outright hatred, trade between the three continued to grow. House Calleron was good friends with the former ruling family of Decrowed, the country to their south, until an uprising killed them and began to turn Decrowed into a republic. The Callerons led Whirlan through the Six-Day War and continued to build a grand empire without help from their neighbors.
During the second millennium, King Reuben and Queen Michela died under suspicious circumstances. Though no trace of poison could be found, a servant of Princess Lavinia fled the palace shortly after the rulers' deaths. Reuben and Michela's son Rendorik was crowned and his wife soon gave birth to Princess Laharika, the Calleron heir. However, seven years later, dissatisfied nobles allied with the foreign country of Dalirn to kill the rulers and take over the country. King Rendorik and Queen Lavinia were both killed, but the princess's body was never found, leading many to believe she was smuggled away and hidden.

Disbandment

During the Assassination of Blood, King Rendorik and Queen Lavinia were killed by Dalirn soldiers and nobles unhappy with the way they ruled. The event killed most of the people in the palace and the fallout from the Dalirn taking over the family removed most of the other Callerons from power. In the current year, Cassandra Issachar, King Rendorik's sister, has gone missing, and Princess Laharika, the Calleron heir, has been missing since the Assassination.

Calleron Marriages

Among Gifted Houses, marriage is often seen as political and nothing more. This can lead to many unhappy marriages within Gifted Houses. In recent years, the emphasis on power has been shifted slightly and many houses, including the Callerons, have begun to choose people that will complement their heirs and work well with them. Although some marriages do not work, most eventually do. King Rendorik and his wife Lavinia fell in love after their marriage and it was often said that they were the perfect power couple. Rendorik's sister Cassandra was rumored to have a loving relationship with her husband Izaiah, although she rarely visited court after she was married and even more rarely spoke to nobles.
I love you, Ren. I love you. I didn't before, when I first met you, when I first married you, but I do now. I didn't support you then, but I will now.

Author's Notes

I made the crest myself with some free time and a notes app. I'm very happy with it. It's just a little uneven, but I like it.

Ooo, a mystery with a missing princess. I'm curious if she is alive or not.   Great overview of the history of the family.

Thank you! (She is in fact alive...) I'm glad you liked the history. I came up with Amelia's story as I was writing the article and I might do an article on House Nistern soon in the future.

Lilliana Casper   I don't comment much, but I love reading your articles! Please check out my worlds, Jerde and Tread of Darkness.
