Ride Leyline Spell in Ithekshem | World Anvil

Ride Leyline

Not all roads are paved with stone or beaten by feet.
Ride Leyline is a family of ritual with a similar effect, one tied to each element with a small supplement of Astral magic. With these spells, a mage can travel almost instanteously along the length of a leyline, reducing a journey of days to minutes. Casting the ritual takes about ten to twenty minutes, and requires the sacrifice of a single manifestion of magic, or two Astral manifestations.

Effect

Ride Leyline briefly converts the caster into pure elemental matter and launches them through the flow of energy. It must be cast near the Leyline they wish to travel and is touched at the conclusion of the rite. Once cast, the mage becomes one with the leyline and can travel along it until they chose to manifest. This does afford the Mage with a limited awareness of the environment surrounding the Leyline - enough not to manifest again inside a volcano, for instance - but not enough to sense any but powerful magical creatures.   Though the mage could theoretically lurk in the Leyline for extended periods of time, racing up and down the Leyline, it is a venture filled with hazard. The longer a mage remains within the leyline, they more diffuse their self becomes. Staying for too long means the mage ceases to be, dying as their energy merges full with the leyline.   The speed of travel through a leyline is roughly ten miles per minute, though it may go slower or faster depending on the power of the mage and the nature of the leyline. When the mage choses to emerge, they rematerialize at the edge of the Leyline.
A variant of the spell - Riders Of Leylines - allows the mage to bring others along for the ride. The same ritual cost must be paid again for every additional person, and they must all travel with the mage.

Places of Power

Leylines are magical arteries of the world, coursing through Ithekshem with wild abandon. They are remnants of the Old World and now warp the land around them, where-ever they go. Geomancy, or magic relating directly to the power of Leylines or other places of Power, is a relatively new school of magical theory, as none of these things existed before.   Places of Power - Leylines

In the World

Every element of Ride Leyline has its own name and particularities. The only exception is Divine, which has no variant of the spell.   Though limited in comparison to teleportation, Ride Leyline is both cheaper and easier to master. It is favored by those who dabble in Astral and are unable to reach the mastery required for more complex ways of magical travel.
Element Name Additional Effects
Astral Moon Bridge Very small risk of attack by Horrors while in transit.
Blood Ride Vein Those who linger submerged in blood risk being tainted or marked by horrors
Necrotic Stygian Path Unpleasant and potentially harmful for living, invigorating for the undead
Air Ride Lightning / Galewind Step Faster than other Ride Leyline spells, at the risk of falling when emerging.
Earth Burrow-Walk Slower t han other Ride Leyline spells, but exceptionally safe and stable.
Fire Ride the Fire Sometimes emerge somewhat on fire
Water Slipstream Always brings the risk of drowning when manifesting
Nature Faery Step None

Battering Ram Ride Another, more offensive variant of the spell aim to use the Leylines as a point of infiltration, usually into a guarded Demesnes or Manse. It trades precision for mass and power, allowing the Mage to bring two additional riders along for the same cost. In exchange, the Battering Ram Ride will deposit the party at the greatest point of power in the Leyline's reach - usually the heart of the place of power.

Interesting. I like that you have different versions of this spell. "Sometimes emerge somewhat on fire" :) I particularly like that line

'Sometimes emerge somewhat on fire.' Hahahaha. Oops.   I love the idea of the spell, and I really like that there are different versions of it depending what element it is. Great names for them too.   I can just imagine the chaos a part of adventurers would cause with this spell.

The cost somewhat crimps down on the chaos, but for sure - it's a limited type of teleport, and we already know what chaos we can cause with teleport :D   Thank you <3

The fire side-effect somehow reminds me of the book about how to survive falling into lava in D&D. "If you fall into lava, you die. Corollary: If you are immune to fire damage, you do not die."

I really like this one, Qurilion. Wonderful use of tables too - Very interesting to see the different elements of Ride Leyline explained so clearly. I wonder what precautions the spellcaster may take when using this spell, just incase it goes terribly wrong?

Thank you :)   That might be something I'll talk about, but it definitely depends. If you are going down a Water leyline, it's a good idea to have some way of breathing water if it ends up depositing you in the middle of the ocean floor, for example.   Maybe I'll add something about it! Thank you for reading and commenting :)

Love the side effects of the different variants! Yes, "sometimes emerge somewhat on fire" is my favorite, too. :D
