Gudrun Geographic Location in Iron Stars | World Anvil

Gudrun

Gudrun was the world first settled by Greenbriar Inc, as the site for the colony meant to provide resources back to a galaxy recovering from war.   Gudrun has a mix of different biomes, and also has a moon that is given over to forest and life of its own.   Fate would take on a much different path. Home to the Taros, a tribe of Piggen, a tribe of Geon, a strain of Underhill Collective, and the now defeated Helldiver Host, Gudrun has long been a melting pot for galactic cultures.    The planet surface is massive, over thirteen times the size of the Earth many of the initial colonists left behind, though they are far from the only humans in the surrounding sectors.   Although not the official Capital of the United Nations of Worlds, it was the first planet to create the union, joined soon after by Aslief and then over a dozen other planets. Today Gudrun remains a critical hub for the United Nations of Worlds, and has become a permanent dock for the triplicate space station the functions of the polity are run out of, a capital in all but official name. A powerful battlefleet is docked here, and settlements are beginning to sprawl across the planet's surface.

Notable Settlements

Central

Central is the place where the human contingent of Greenbriar Inc made their emergency landing in the wake of The Scream. Starting small as a scrap settlement of only 5,000 survivors, the city quickly grew and expanded. Refugees that crashed on other parts of the planet made their way through woods, meadows, and mountains to arrive here, seeking sanctuary. Central has developed into a bustling capital within a capital for what became the United Nations of Worlds. Humans are still the dominant species here, but Central has become a melting pot of all the various species that make up the polity. Today the city is home to hundreds of thousands and continues growing and the skyline is an eclectic mix of different species architectural preferences.   In early 2665, Central almost fell to an Underhill swarm. The citizens armed themselves with makeshift weapons and shields, fighting as shield walls in the streets against endless waves of the enemy before the swarm eventually broke. The citizens of Central have an extreme amount of pride in their city, and most of the mementos from that battle are proudly displayed in family homes as badges of honor.   A rail network connects Central to the Taros cities to the west, and the other human settlements to the north and east. A Geon culture has also been discovered in the mountain range nicknamed the 'spine of the world'. They have reluctantly joined the United Nations of Worlds as trial members.

Carinhold

Carinhold was the most powerful city-state of the former Taros Confederation, and became the de-facto capital of the alliance as the fighting against the Underhill Collective forced the Taros to stop fighting one another to unify against the common threat. Carinhold is also the most advanced of the Taros cities on the planet, featuring a VI that survived The Scream, and is responsible for running most of the city's functions. Traffic lights, waste processing, trash collection, and other mundane functions are all handled by a fleet of drones keyed to the city network. Powerful ECM fields instantly fry any unregistered drones near the city.   Carinhold also features a robust airport, and the Seung Whitaker Military Academy where the best soldiers from across Gudrun come to train before returning to their home planets as instructors in new specializations and modern combat tactics.

Delphos

Delphos is the home of the Piggen culture that survived the great Piggen exodus. The city was fouded afer the initial Piggen settlements on the moon were proven to be untenable. The desert city is walled and was rebuilt in record time after a battle between the Piggen, their human allies from Central, and a race of robots named Helldivers. The city was largely destroyed as a result of the batlte, though the Piggen culture survived, and since then has thrived. The Piggen are working to irrigate the land around their city, making a small patch of green in an otherwise harsh desert landscape.

Port Neiu Nieu Rotterdam

Port Neiu Nieu Rotterdam is built on the northern shores of Gudrun's Pangea like landmass. It was established by the humans of the pre-United Nations of Worlds colonists. Port Neiu Nieu Rotterdam features a large deep water port built inside a natural cove protects ships that have come in to unload ore from the Lazlow mining project established on the former Underhill Island to the north, or be re-loaded with miners, machinery, fuel, and food for the encampment there.   In addition to a large lighthouse built onto the leading edge of the cove, the town consists of a town center, homes for a few thousand of Gudrun's residents, a data center to facilitate their communication needs, and a large train depot complete with all the equipment necessary to load and unload train cars with cargo. The town is entirely industrial in nature aside from a few bars and other distractions for its working populace.   Several smaller fishing vessels and their parent fish product processing factories are also located in the port town.   A small regional airport on the city's western edge is where the occasional passenger lighter or cargo lifter from orbit sets down when business brings offworlders and merchants to the port.

Vapormills

Vapormills is the newest of the cities that the Taros Confederation had built. Their 'youth' is defined as the city only being established for a few hundred years. Vapormills was the first city to reach friendly terms with the crash landed humans of Central, in the days before the United Nations of Worlds existed. Vapormills suffered several more Underhill swarm attacks than its more developed neighbors, and with the Underhill now gone from Gudrun the city has completed its final stages of rebuilding its outer districts.   Cyberware, light manufacturing of gas and chemical products, and the construction of both Atmospheric and Grav aircraft are the city's main industries. A rail line connects them to the human settlements to the east, and to the other Taros settlements to the west, cementing Vapormills as an emergent gateway for intraplanetary trade.
