Stumbling into 2024

Hey, hey party people; happy 2024.
I am fairly new to World Anvil. My world, Ida has only even existed as anything more then random notes behind my GM screen for a little over 2 months.
I have never been very confident in my ability to write. Honestly hanging around here has not helped that, because I am surrounded by so many skilled writers that I couldn’t hope to ever match.
I can’t say I have experienced writers block, at lest not in the way I imagine real writers do. My mind is an ever swirling cacophony of ideas. my issue is dealing with the frustration of trying to get them to line up on a document in a consistent coherent digestible form. I want to write about “the cool thing” but to get to the “cool thing” you got to write all this other…”stuff”. Without it, “the cool thing” will only ever make sense in the maelstrom of stupidity that is my own snail infested brain.   I hate that.     ANYWAY~!
On to my resolutions.

GOALS

  • Finish what you start

“”I’ll come back to that later.” the balding frumpy man lied, wandering off to play Baldur’s Gate III for another hundred hours.
NO LONGER!
I will expand those articles I said I will expand. I will flesh out characters and organizations, I will make Rookland a fully realized city! (…eventually.)

  • RITE MOAR GOODER

I struggle with describing details. This year I will learn to properly set up a damn scene, like real writers do instead of trying to drag my confused readers to the next “cool thing” like a large overexcited dog on a leash.

  • LOCK DOWN THE DETAILS OF IDA

So far I have been building a bridge as I try to walk across it, (which is the way I GM) but the further I go the harder it is going to be to keep pulling vague things out of my ass, without actually working out and explaining how they work.
I realize I have used the word “magikinetic” about two dozen times so far and other then the extremely vague implication of casting magic, I have no actual rules or constraints for them.
How hard is it to cast magikinetics? How rare is the ability? What effect on society do Kineticists have? I DON’T KNOW I just thought street wizards and robots was a cool aesthetic!   Gotta fix that.

Articles from people that know what they're doing

Chrispy_0's Floating Gardens of Azura is the article that shamed me into actually sitting down and learn how to do some manual formating so my articles would not be so butt fuggly to try and read though.
I still can't hold a candle to their custom CSS tricks, I like to think my own articles at lest are less painful to stare at now.

It's things like this that make me regret having a world where I have to create an internal scientific logic for how something is possible. "You pissed off the gods so bad they won't even let you die." is just so metal. If I ever get around to making another setting, I am going full fantasy just so I can go nuts with the world building.

WEED MISSLE!
I had seen Jontaro's distinct stylized artwork before I had even joined World Anvil. He really is a triple threat. A great artist, an excellent writer, and a skilled article designer. His Knights article feels like something you could find in an offbeat TTRPG sourcebook.

I am a sucker for unique nonstandard fantasy locations, and the concept of cities designed for something other then humans always sparks my imagination.

From the same prolific creator as the last article; notahumanhand really impressed me with this one. I have seen plenty of instances of “Thieves Cants” used in stories before, but what they have done is nothing less then create an entire functioning coded speech system, and breaking down exactly how it is use to secretly communicate information masked under seemingly banal chit chat. Very cool.

Jarhed weaves the unique touching tale of a bunch of unfathomably evil masters of undeath just deciding they should, you know, hang out some time. Villans off the clock is always a fun topic to explore.

CulenaryPunk is a setting so ridiculous you would think it would be a one off joke, but Emily Armstrong puts more effort and quality in the writing and visuals of the world then I have seen in some printed works. She writes about cow people with spaghetti for hair in the mater-of-fact style one would write about any “normal” fantasy race with concise information, beautiful layout, unique consistent art style.
The only question is will Emily Armstrong ever run out of food puns?

No, Emily Armstrong will never run out of food puns.

mage josh's Changing Stars setting has a lot going on to make it feel like more then just window dressing for a TTRPG.
His Religions article have reminded me how underdeveloped my ideas of faith systems in Ida are. Religion is more then just a belief in a god, it's philosophies and credos that mold entire communities and cultures.

Greetings! We have some similar goals. I need to somehow weave together my inter-related articles in a way that folks can digest without having to stumble down a rabbit hole of links at the bottom of the articles. It sounds like you have a lot of content already and I am excited to start exploring. Interested to see you flesh out your magic system this year. Thanks for sharing Captain Claw and the other Space Pirate Robot Kitties! <3

You've definitely improved the way your articles look and feel! (I wouldn't know about the old ones, but they've looked great ever since I stumbled on Rookland!)

I mean, your anime inspired techno-magical world is a pretty awesome aesthetic... The nitty gritty details always take time, but fortunately most people are too distracted by the cool aesthetic to notice until after you write about the details!   Good luck with your goals this year and thanks for mentioning my article!
