The Rueful Plains

The Grey Waste, The Rueful Plains are the grimly given names of the flat lands between the edges of The Sun kissed Hills and the foot of The Teeth of the Scorched Dunes. In this land of ashen grass and sickly trees are also home to all manner of strange ranging beasts and wild horses that some say can speak and even side with either men or elves in wars.

Geography

Much like its neighbor The Sun Kissed Hills, the plains are a place of hills and flats that stretch for what seems like forever, but just as you stop seeing where you came from you begin to see where you are going to and the view would take any adventurers breath away. To the north is the shores of the Sea of Clouds, toward the south is the Sulking Sea and Mournful Bay, to the east lies the base of the Teeth the mountain range that separates both the Rueful Plains and the Hidden Vine from the Scorched Dunes. The plains are a well known place and equally as traveled all roads within the plains start at either the Sun kissed Hills or The Narrows a small pass within the Teeth. The hills of the plains are renowned for their calming image and their strange aura that makes all travelers who gaze upon them have a sudden longing for home. The hills are grassy with varying degrees of incline some being slight while others are almost vertical. But all having small melancholy groves of trees and flowers atop them with strange stones encircled at the center.

Fauna & Flora

The plains are home to a few dozen species of birds, beasts, and plants. The plants of this place are of the trees and the grass, the trees clump together in small groves atop the many hills of the plains they are sickly looking trees with blacked peeling bark that leaks a vile smelling red sap from within itself, the leaves of these trees are no better they are spiny needles of black and brown that fall from the trees like icicles and shatter as they hit the ground. The grass of the plains is of an ashen grey with blood red roots whose blades can grow to the height of a mans torso. The animals either travel in herds or fly flocks above hills, but the most common of these beats is the Stone Mare a species of highly intelligent horses that roam and graze throughout the entirety of the plains they are mostly docile but have been known to attack whole caravans if provoked. Another beast grazes side by side with the Stone Mare and likes to bed down under the Blood Pines at night to block out the cold winds that sweep across the plains at night. This animal is a species of deer called the Silver Stag, they have a snow white pelt and males have red antlers that look as if they were stayed with red wine in the summer time the antlers are covered with a silver felt like fur that they scrape off before winter. Deer and horses are not the only things that roam the plains, a species of wolf that the elves of the plains have called the Moon Claws prowl the plains at night in search of sleeping deer or bay mares to eat. The wolves have also been known to drag travelers off into the night and the last thing that is heard that night is a light whimper and a great celebratory howl. High above the plains fly the Grey Hawks a species of giant falcon that hunt the baby stone mare, silver stag, and Moon Claws, both during the day and at the dead of night when their parents are either asleep or out hunting.
