Pavlopetri

Description
The small town of Pavlopetri is located in southern Laconia along the coast. The Oméga Réma river runs through the town, and has several wooden bridges spanning its width. The majority of buildings are built using local stone covered in stucco and have red tiled roofs. The exceptions to this are the marble buildings of the Temple of Nike complex and the Jade tower of Phoebe.   On the west bank of the river is the Spartan way, a well made road that eventually leads to Sparta. The town's Taverna, Temple of Nike, Hoplite barracks, the palace of Kyros, and the ancient tomb of Hippias are also located west of the river.   On the east bank is the Rhodon way, famous for the wild roses that grow along its borders, the Temple of Poseidon, the Stadion with its Colossus of Nike, the Tower of Phoebe, and the famous Ampitheatre where the first performance of 'The Sage of Pylos' was performed (the play by Antiphodes).   As is the custom for Spartan towns and cities there are no defensive walls, instead the town is situated in the Rema valley with wooded hills to east and west. The Tsironi wood is known locally for its many ponds rich with rudd and roach.   North of Pavlopetri along the Spartan way are the fields and farms of the Helots, where wheat, barley, apples, pears, apricots, and groves of olive trees are cultivated. The helots also farm sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and some cattle. Horses, although rarer, are also available for farm work, leisure, or chariot racing.

Demographics

The town has 681 citizens living in it, 307 hoplites, and 7,437 helots under its jurisdiction.   There are approximately 57 young adults of Pavlopetri undertaking the agōgē.
