Vargr/Vargar (Vur-gr)
General Information
The vargar are massive wolves. Many races believe vargar to be the physical counterpart to fenrir as both creatures draw power from Patala-loka. While fenrir draw their powers straight from this plane, vargar use aura to manipulate the forces of chaos. Vargar are incredibly intelligent creatures. Some beings that have studied vargar say these creatures are just as smart as them in their own way. Though the development of a vargr’s brain is very different from any humanoid race, so general intelligence can’t be easily compared. With a vargr’s intelligence and unique source of power, they are incredibly dangerous. A single vargr can easily kill any therianthropy. An entire pack of them can spell the doom of a member from the more powerful races, such as the dvergar and dökkálfar.
History
Early On
The vargar have a pretty rough history with the races of Hárronfall. Their packs used to be scattered all over both continents. Even different breeds are known to exist in far-off lands as the jötun were familiar with vargar from their homeland. In Hárronfall, their population used to be most dense in the central forests and unpopulated lands where the therianthropy tribes were scattered.
Some vargr lived in the hills where dvergar and dökkálfar lived or in Talatala-loka’s Gate, though they were careful to stay clear of developed areas in these parts. A pack of vargar could take down a few members of these races, but an entire town or city could easily overpower a dozen vargar. To avoid danger, most vargar kept well away from the more powerful races of this time. A good number of vargar also lived in the southern plains, though their population wasn’t as abundant as those from the central forests.
Changes
As the dvergr and ljósálfr started to shape their influence on the therianthropy lands things took a turn for the worse for the vargar. The therianthrope learned to accept and live with the vargar prowling around their back doors, but these other two races weren’t having it. They saw the vargr as a nuisance that needed to be put down. Bounties were placed on vargr pelts to encourage bands of hunters to track and kill the vargar.
The vargar struck back viscously. They knew war was initiated on their kind and they had to fight for their survival. Packs banded together to attack and defend against larger groups and even towns of these two races. What started as an irritation toward the vargar, changed into a vile hatred. The dvergar and ljósálfar stood strong in their conviction. They adapted their strategy. Instead of encouraging minor groups of hunters to track down the vargar, they founded entire armies with the soul purpose of slaughtering these animals. The vargar couldn’t handle the full force of perfectly trained warriors, and their population suffered greatly.
The vargar had a brief moment of peace when the álfar rose to power. A prominent leader in the rebel army saved the life of a vargr pup. This vargr was a fierce and loyal companion to the álfr that raised her. She was treated as much of a valiant member of the rebel army as much as any álfr. The bond this álfr had with his vargr did much to shape the álr’s opinion of vargr kind. They didn’t see these animals as monsters like the dvergar and ljósálfr, but recognized them as intelligent, living creatures that had a right to life as much as the álfar. For the time that the álfar were in power, the vargar population of Talatala-loka’s Gate.
Before the álfar kingdom fell, many therianthrope and even some dvergar recognized their folly in killing so many vargar. The natural ecosystems were suffering from the loss of one of the key species. But the majority of the dvergar still held a grudge against the vargar. Much of their kind died because of those beast and their agriculture suffered as well. While the dvergar no longer have a standing army that hunts the vargar, nor do they offer bounties for the killing of these animals, many of the kind still hunt them for sport and personal glory.
Modern Day
The vargar are now a bit of a rarity in the Northern Continent. Only the most conning of vargr packs have survived that learned to hide their presence from the dvergar. Many vargr packs stay close to kelpie gathering places and hunting grounds. The kelpie live closer to nature and know how important the vargar are to the ecosystem. They also sympathize with the vargar’s situation. They defend any vargr in danger and even heal the wounded among them.
The vargar in the southern plains have always remained unmolested. The southern continent has always rested far out of reach from the dvergar and other prominent races. When the jötun took over this land, the vargar only benefited. The vargar share a close connection with their goddess of the moons and enchantments. Vargar are seen as one of the four great animal spirits and killing one is a serious crime. Vargar are allowed to feed from the catoblepones that the jötun herd through their lands. Many vargar packs travel with the jötun clans. In exchange for the food the jötun provides, a vargar pack will warn the jötun they follow of any outside threats and even fight to protect the jötun in battle.
