Therianthropy/Therianthrope

General Information

The therianthrope are humanoids with animalistic physical traits such as a furry tail, pointed ears, sharp claws and teeth, or other things. They can have minor, singular characteristics to multiple, major animal parts. The therianthrope have the largest population of all the races in the valley. They have some of the smallest pools of aura with only three gates that they primarily use to communicate and enhance their physical strength and senses.

The therianthrope are the only race that has a separate organ for sensing heat and infrared light. This way they can sense very subtle changes in the infrared spectrum that no other race can. They can even sense subtle slight differences in another’s mood when the other races can only see the major ones. By using aura to communicate they have evolved to sense infrared over distances that no other being can. While most other races excel in one or two senses, all the therianthrope’s senses are incredibly sensitive.

Their lifespans are about a century to a century and a half. They reach physical maturation between the ages of eighteen and twenty while their aura fully matures between the ages of twenty and twenty-five. They have two sets of eye cones and rods, one set of cones for blue light waves, one for green, one set of rods for visible light, one for ultraviolet. They can sense sounds between 25 Hz and 98 kHz.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The therianthrope in technicality all speak one language, but with many dialects. In the earlier years, each clan spoke a different dialect, with subtle differences from the surrounding clans. A clan could communicate with minor issue to the clans next to them. But the dialectic shifted and changed more and more with clans a greater distance away to the point where two clans many days’ old travel away could no longer understand each other.

The therianthrope developed a form of simple sign language to accompany their words. This sign language was the same between all clans. That way, the different members of each clan could roughly communicate with others of their kind from far-off places.

As the ljósálfar and dvergar moved in and took control of more therianthropy territory, the different dialects merged as the therianthrope moved around more freely. Each major city has their own dialect but the changes between them are more subtle so that most therianthrope can communicate regardless of the distance. Therianthropy still part of small towns and clans still keep to the old ways and maintain their old dialects. All therianthrope still know their old sign language. Other races also adapted to using the therianthropy hand signs when communicating to those that don’t share the same language.

Common Dress code

The main piece of garment to the therianthrope is the hajept. This one long piece of cotton cloth colored red, black, and yellow with mud dyes. The abstract design on the hajept tells the story of the therianthropy’s family line, personal accomplishments, and rank. In the summer, therianthropy males wear the hajept wrapped around one shoulder and their waist. Females wear the hajept tucked above their breast line. In the winter, the hajept is used as a cloak. Many therianthrope have adopted the dvergar or dökkálfar style of garments in major cities and keep their hajept for more ceremonial purposes.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The therainthrope believe in assigned gender roles but do not see one sex or gender above the other. A woman’s voice in court or clan has an equal weight as a man’s, though the different sexes have different sects of power to govern. In the clans and cities that the therainthrope govern it is a man's job to deal with issues such as war, defense and hunting while the women are in charge of the more internal affairs. The women keep peace between the families in the clans and if two families come to a disagreement, the women of the families are the ones to solve the dispute. In times of famine, it is a women’s job to decide where the tribe must go to find food.

History of the Therianthropy

In the early days of therianthropy history, they were a clan based society. Each minor clan stayed within their small chunks of territory inside the center lands of Hárronfall. Some built cities in the lands that supported that kind of growth, while others stuck to a more natural form of life and lived off the land.
Each clan of therianthrope varied differently in appearance that reflected the biomass they lived within. Those that lived in the marshes that were thick with large growth of reeds were small and scrawny in stature, with slitted pupils and long claws. Those that lived at the bay were tall and slender, with wide tails and webbed fingers and toes. Those that lived on the southern plains had horns and were big and bulky with wiry fur. Each clan was of different height, builds, and traits that best suited their environment.
When the dvergar and ljósálfar stretched out their reach of control to the center lands, and the fey wandered out in the southern plains, they brought therianthrope from all over to build their territory. These therianthrope were from many clans that never intermingled before. More variation in a therianthropy's appearances came because of the interbreeding between tribes. One might have horns, along with webbed fingers. There also came a whole new range of color pattering on their skin and fur for those that had it.
After all the different clans intermingled, there were changes to the therianthrope race that were never seen before. Some children were born with no traits at all. When these children matured and came into their aura, they could change shape into a beast. Their beast form was quite feline or canine, but something in between, with appearances as varied as the therianthrope themselves. Some beast forms had horns, while some didn’t. Others were as large as bears, while others were the size of large dogs. Each one verified in fur length, texture, and pattern.
A therianthropy in their beast form was much more powerful than even the strongest therianthropy that couldn’t change shape. These therianthrope were incredibly rare, with maybe three shape changers alive at a time at first. Over the years, while shape changers are still rare, they have become more common. Each city might have a few therianthropy inhabitants that can change shape.
