Baoro (Bay-oo-roe)
When the jötun landed in Hárronfall and started raiding the southern plains, the dvergar were left reeling. They were still recovering from the attack on the álfar and their armies were greatly reduced. The jötun, while a small fleet of a couple hundred, were powerful and their abilities were unknown.
The dvergar leaders decided, to the misfortune of many, that the southern plains were a lost cause. The area was largely unpopulated and technically not under the Dvergr Empire’s jurisdiction. Instead, they went to work building up their defenses along the northern coast of the Warnek Channel.
The largest cities along the channel were made into guard posts. Permanent dvergar and dökkálfar guards were assigned to live in these posts and watch for any sign of jötun attacks. The simple, wooden walls around these cities were reinforced with crystal towers.
Of these three cities Baoro was the most populated, with the most resources, and set at the middle of the channel. Because of the location, the largest guard was assigned here and the most resources were pooled into increasing its defenses.
A few small skirmishes started over the years as several jötun clans tried to extend their reach past the channel. They attacked in cities and towns where the dvergar had the smallest presence. The guard from the closest outpost rushed to the aid of the city under attack and the jötun were pushed back.
As the jötun saw how fruitless their efforts were, they stopped attacking. The dvergr guard was pulled from the smaller two posts as their defenses became no longer necessary and too costly to maintain. Baoro became the sole defender left along the coastline, always to remain standing to remind the jötun that their presence is unwanted in dvergr territory.
Industry & Trade
All cities and towns along the coast are primarily fishing outposts, except Baoro. Fishing supplements the diets of Baoro residents, but not the economic staple. Baoro focuses most of its industry on one cash crop, little barley.
The soil along the Warnek Channel is ideal for growing barley. Other small farms along the coast grow the crop as well, but they all come to Baoro to sell and trade their barley crop wield. Thanks to the strong and constant influence the dvergar have over the city, the prices for selling crops are some of the best and the city has some of the quickest exports.
While Baoro started with a more diverse economy with several focuses of interest, the dvergar’s influence created a vicious cycle where the production, selling, and export of barley became the inhabitants of Baoro sole economic focus.
