Kailopali

Southwest of the main Khilaian Isles lies a single small island, the summit of an underwater mountain protruding from the great ocean. On top of that island is a castle-temple, old and venerable. Speckled black volcanic rock make up the castle facades, but the castle walls are a wide range of colorfs from paints and colorful woven cords that decorate the surface. This castle has never come under siege, for its primary purposes lie in the great slabs of stone that jut out over the water: this is the primary communion temple between the Selkies and Immortal Kailio, an otter of vast size and magical power.   Kailopali is a castle of priests, who regularly give sacrifices of food and musical entertainment to the great Otter God. The castle's defensive fortifications serve as a display against foreigners who might wish to threaten the Khilaia, and represent the spiritual protection of Kailio over the Sacred Isles. Only a small retinue live here full time, and access to Kailopali is strictly controlled by the Khilaian government.   The undersea mountain has a larger population than the actual castle. A lush kelp forest grows here, enriched with the corpses of the Leviathans who sought to challenge Kailio's dominance (as Leviathan corpses are magically hyper-nutritious and make for truly exceptional ecological boons). The local Squiddles live here full time, farming Crabcows and protecting the waters from raiders sworn to Apex.   This is one of several homes of Kailio; the great Otter is known to go many places around the Isles. The island is hollow, with numerous air pockets and tiny air vents in the porous stone under the castle. When Kailio vanishes from the oceans, he is usually napping in the mountain hollows.
