Kailio

The God of Protection, Child of Daykai Kailio Khidaya

Kailio is a giant immortal sentient otter approximately 365 feet long, created by The Chimera to protect the Khilaian Isles. It hibernates for extremely long periods underneath the bay between Okailu and Motosui, and used to be so rarely seen as to be almost mythical. Since the late 900's ME, that has started to change, with more "social visits". As the legitimacy of leaders of The Khilaia has become dependent on approval from Kailio, they have devoted more resources to offering gifts of luxury food and trinkets, luring Kailio from the depths. While Kailio has little interest in politics, they have been willing to befriend the priests who talk to them- by the 1800's they began attending social parties every decade during their feast day. In the late 1900's, they actually began awakening annually, though they've retreated from that standard since.   Kailio is also a mythological character and god in the Selkie religious tradition of Hamekun as God of protection and family. They have done little to correct this mythology, but seem to enjoy the associated feast day.   Because of Kailio's friendship with the legendary Dhampir-philosopher Moxima the Blessed, Kailio is also deified in Sumoxan religion, which has imported much of Kailio's cult from Hamekun.

Holidays

The Kainalia, feast day of Kailio, takes place every mid-summer. It is a day of celebration, public games, and parades. Sailing competitions, shows for otter breeders, chariot racing, and wrestling all take place in the Holy Isles on this day. Crews abroad will often meet up with their fleets or flotillas for wrestling matches, dancing, and feasting.   The Kainalia, as the day of family, is an auspicious day for marriage or childbirth. Any children born on such a day are often dressed up and celebrated during the Kainalia, and marriages are common during the festivities.
