Kilamehal

Kilamehal is an ancient selkie capital and home to the original Motosui Assembly. While it has been surpassed by Halamahi for many centuries, it remains the seat of power of the Exarch of Motosui - the regional governor who manages the Island.    Kilamehal stands watch over the Western bay, protected from storms by great black hills of sharp obsidian glass and porous igneous rock. The great castle and manor, memorialized in stone, is painted with blue and cyan markings. Beneath it lies the small garden-port and town, with its verdant orchards and rice fields.    This is the central command point for the Selkie Sacred Guard, and the most-garrisoned and most militarized part of the Sacred Isle. Numerous smiths and martial craftsmen ply their trade here, fashioned and repairing the garrison armor. This is also the administrative center for a number of the Hanahai bureaucracies such as the Wardens of The Sacred Isles - who have a druidic grove and circle chamber here.    The warriors and bureaucrats entirely drive the local economy - the town has a disproportionate number of armorsmiths and clerks for a reason. There are still some farmers, day-to-day artisans, and obsidian miners, of course, but even they have come to rely on the trade and infrastructure of the government. Hamekun traditions and cults are hammered into this town's DNA, and the cults of the ancestral gods are very visible.    It is known that the Otter God Kailio is fond of the town and likes to come here to sunbathe at the market and chat. This is less frequent than rumors would suggest, but it does happen.

Demographics

2,500 humanoids live here. All are Selkies, and most are middling class; the money flows well down to the clerks and craftspeople here.

Points of interest

The Grand Plaza: A central market and event space right by the docks and ocean, complete with a large oceanside ramp for the Great God Kailio to come up and sunbathe or join in an ongoing festival. Festivals occur here every month according to the Khilaian Calendar  The Ancestral Museum-Shrine: A cross between a museum and a temple, occupying the Old Assembly Building. Relics of the ancient past are kept here, and storytellers come to the ancient legislative floor to tell stirring stories of the ancestors and ancestral gods.    Kilamehal Keep: The governing and military center of the island, home to the Exarch of Motosui  The Grovethrone of the Wardens: Administrative and political center of the Wardens of The Sacred Isles, where druids are trained and where the highest druids discuss how to best protect the island's ecosystems.

Tourism

Pilgrimmage and tourism to Kilamehal is fairly common; there is something sacred about this place that the dense modernity of Halamahi just can't find in itself. Most people try and time their visits to the festivals.    As this is the center of Warden power, the May festival of Kanaiho is particularly big here.   The big pilgrim tavern here is the Yalopali, or Day and Night House, a grand and storied Inn fashioned from an ancient manor belonging to the ancestral Watakilai. A building that is old and almost self-parodyingly traditionalist, run by a stoic and businessmanlike innkeep. While the innkeep may be serious, the entertainment here can be quite fun - the local wardens and cultists do regular shows here for free, including the famous dancing otter show.    If you are looking for something more local and lived-in, perhaps try the favorite local's tavern The Glass Goose, run by a notorious prankster and local stand-up comedian. While the innkeep is a bit much, they have good prices and good stock. If you aren't a local, expect to be mocked and pranked until you leave or until you buy enough rounds to be forgiven.
