Skirts

The most diverse district in the city, Skirts is the festive underbelly of Granmont. A "checkerboard" district, seedy alleys and unsavory corners exist right next to quaint homesteads and thriving neighborhoods.   With large smallfolk populations and a general lack of opulence the streets are packed and winding with buildings crammed into nooks that larger ancestries would never think of building in.   Skirts is the only district that doesn't have a human majority. This diversity and vibrance give it the nickname "Granmont's Kaleidescope". With each culture bringing their own celebrations, traditions, and holidays (and general Skirts culture never passing up a party) festivals and jubilation are common, leading Skirts to also bear status as Granmont's "Carnival District".

History and Culture

Due to the colonization of the Empire and the Missionary work of the Church, the entirety of Granmont is a massively multicultural metropolis but nowhere can this be felt more than in the multiracial ghetto of Skirts.   In the early days of the city the district was a small cluster of streets featuring the petite homes and businesses of Granmont Halflings and Gnomes, it has since been settled by Genasi, Tieflings, Catfolk, Orcs, and countless other ancestries.   The vibrant subcultures of Skirts lend the area some of Granmont's best bistros and brasseries, many of which host live entertainment nightly. People from all over the city travel to Skirts to partake in the nightlife, often flying in the face of the district's rougher corners.   Skirts is renowned throughout the city for its distinctive cuisine, nightlife, and slang, as well as its many festivals and holidays that have been adapted from the global cultures of its denizens.

Neighborhoods

Due to the diversity of Skirts its difficult to pinpoint and singular dominate culture. Instead, individuals with similar backgrounds tend to flock together, although this is a generalization not a rule and people from any walk of life can be found everywhere in the district.   The Smalltown neighborhood is primarily gnome and halfling with humans, half-elves and dwarves filling in the rest.   Sepulcher Hill features the Baudelaire Military Cemetary and attracts ex-soldiers and their families for the support networks offered.   The massive tenement buildings of Smoke City Tenament Projects forms a virtually closed ecosystem of its own, teeming with crime and impoverished residents struggling to make ends meet.   Brick Bridge serves as the main artery into Skirts and is the site of Echande Exchange, the largest open-air market in the city; it is said that anything can be found their by a discerning collector.
